What's the going rate for a decent 440 or 383 motor

Post by Hearserider67 »

What should I expect to pay for a 440 or 383 motor that would need a rebuild ?
Anybody got one of these ....? Cheers Ian

The Killer question here is "How do you know the engine is rebuildable without stripping and measuring it?"

Buyer beware, you end up taking a punt in many cases.

I bought a 454 BBC a while back - "Rebuilt" - I stripped it and the Bores were worn and all the Bearings down to the copper.
I am sure that would have run just right!

Had new (cheap) Head Gaskets though - work that one out!!

Thanks Pete , buyer beware indeed, I watched a youtoob video where someone sold a 383 motor as running and complete and it had timing chain and other internals removed !
Very unscrupulous people about these days more than ever .

well the days for £1 per cubic inch seem to be gone... :) if ebay is anything t go by...

late 360 here for £700 delivered seems seems steep given the owners appraisal...but there is another reason it has sat there for a while. RISK

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DODGE-360-V8 ... SwlfFdghBY

so if a 360 is £625 a 400 440 or 383 will potentially be more, based on nothing but cubic inches, anything less may be more decrepit or in BITS which should be seen as a good thing

you can measure what you buy before you buy it.

don't discount a 400 out of a motor home. not a performance engine by any stretch, its built to LUG a motor home, but its big and in some cases the block is a good basis for better things.....

issued in police vehicles as well

they came out at the point where they changed from gross to net hp rating, 1970s and often had a 2bbl carb hence on paper they looked like a truck engine rather than what they were.... a 383 with a bigger bore, cast into the block by design (not bored)... hence a level of under appreciation

I just sold a 360 block for £350. If the engine was complete it would be £700. I see 318's selling for £700-1000 all the time. Madness!

The last 340 (1968) I bought was £1000, but it had a noise and it was a gamble, looks like I got lucky though, DaveB had a quick check over and it looks like lifters and push-rods.

My other 340 I bought (1973) was also £1000.

383's seem to be almost given away these last few years.

440's are regularly on ebay for about £1000-£1500, mostly ripped outta motorhomes etc.
I'm here because Im not all there!!
