New starter or rebuild it?

Post by Goblinking »

Just a quick question,i have a 318 with headers and the starter is tired, sticking a lot and sometimes turns over slow, needs a knock to get going.
Now,do i rebuild it or buy a new one?

:thumbright: :thumbright: :thumbright: Will turn it over twice as fast - amazing things.

There are various, some cheap-as and some expensive. I broke an expensive one and am currently running a cheap one and cane see any difference - Dave999 knows more than I. I do know heat kills them if you have hot-headers so I wrapped it this time.

yeah on a US mopar, well on cars at least from the era we like, any starter for a mid 90s 318 magnum works say mid 90s dodge truck starter

Its a denso starter

i have been using a US sourced rebuilt cheapo for the last 5 years cost me about £50 and then 40 odd to ship

but still...

work on 273 318 340 360 400 440

10 tooth 35 mm pinion

this would do the job

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/New-Mini-Sta ... Sw~gpgD0x4

keep in mind to buy some crimp on connectors. no guarantee that your car will have the same as the starter

obviously the eye for the main feed will work but the switch wire could be small ring or spade.

if you still run a ballast resistor leave the 3rd wire off

this normally plugs into a switched 12 volt supply that is ON when the key is turned to start and off at all other times

and there was a connector for it on your old starter. if you leave it taped up a modern battery makes up for it..... they sag less when under load

Mopar retrofit terminal set for Denso starters here

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Mopar-mini-s ... SwLi1co~X3

i never bothered

if you car is Australian or has an Australian drivetrain come back and there are options
If your current stater is a 9 tooth 25 mm pinion or 10 tooth 27 mm pinion BOSCH...you have an Australian ring gear and starter
and ingenuity will be necessary

just get same starter above and it will need a pinion swap

if it is Australian and has a 727 and a v8 it used a US starter 35 mm pinion etc same as US

other alternative is one of these

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/9300-Powerma ... SwiCRUks7E

same body
same snout
potentially different windings and gearing in the motor

these are modular starters so for hi torque the Chrysler snout is pared with gearing and a motor unit from a bigger or heavier engine like a diesel

but its not hard to rebuild one so i tend to just buy the cheap ones not the 300 quid jobby

your orginal one of these will work

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/for-Mopar-38 ... %3A2334524

but its hole is too big

glue it in the right place with silicone

or tie a thin thread through the top bolt hole which will be snapped when you put in the bolt

just keeps the shim in the right place for getting the bolt in

No probs

did a bit of work last year to get mine working and had a lot of input from Luke Wos at WOSP. Nice chap and quite free with the details on denso starters

which is very nice given that his business is starters for race cars
provided bits to try and advice etc

all round good chap

you can take your car to him, and based on size, compression and no. of cylinders he will build a starter....
http://www.wosperformance.co.uk/

i.e dealing with a dude here and a guarantee here might be useful for really high $$$$ cars

he can build you anything you want but it will be a few more ££ than the rebuilt one i listed which should be fine and dandy for anything with OEM or medium performance

Definitely go mini starter, lots more room around headers, faster turning. Win win.

I ordered that very starter motor pictured above, from Rockauto.
Arrived in 3 days and fit like a glove, super impressed with Rockauto.I paid extra for express shipping, should i have bothered?how fast do things usually come from Rockauto using standard shipping?
Fitted the new starter, turned the key and nothing, but it fires straight away if you jump the solenoid on the wing.
Really torquey starter, but Dave999 was right,i prefer the sound of the mopar starter.
So now i just have to find out why it doesnt turn over off the key.
I wonder if the old starter knacked the relay? There used to be sparks flying out of the starter when it was trying to turn over and now i have it off the car it looks really crusty.

Rock Auto have been very good for me, usually 5 days with standard shipping. Some places in the UK can't manage that.
