Transmission leaks

I have what looks like a couple of leaks (727) and before I start yanking it to bits and get myself in trouble, thought I’d ask advice.

One looks to be from the speedo cable. Am I right in saying this is just an o ring, or is there more that I should be looking for? Want to order parts up front if it’s inexpensive stuff, as fed up of getting into a job and finding I don’t have what I need and losing a weeks driving.

Also looks to be leaking from the sump, so was going to order a Fram ft1039a filter kit and gasket, as I can get one for less than £15. Two questions - Is this a job I can do easily in the dirt, as I haven’t got access to a lift and don’t want to start pulling anything? Can anyone who has used one tell me if the kits come with both gaskets, as I can’t see where to order between 904 and 727, bu the pics all seem to show both. (No description that I can see, which is helpful…)

Hi Stu,
Yes i think it's just an o ring for the speedo cable. Don't know the size tho.
And every trans filter / gasket kit i've bought seems to come with both 904 and 727 gaskets.
I would have thought there's hundreds of spares around, you just need to be mates with someone who has the opposite trans to you.

The speedo drive has 2 seals, a small one between the drive itself and the housing and an O ring between the housing and the tail shaft. The filter is easy enough to change but it’s a messy job as there’s no drain plug and the transmission will continue to drip for as long as you have the pan off. I always fit an aftermarket cast aluminium pan on my own cars as a) there’s more oil capacity b) the pan rail is thick and flat, it doesn’t leak and c) it has a drain plug.

Finally got some time between work and other crap to get onto this and the main issue is definitely Speedo drive seals. Reading through the manual for a quick overview and it tells me I need to use Tool C-4004 to push the seal and retainer ring into the adapter.

Can’t find any images of the tool other than the dodgy diagram in the manual.

My question is, do I actually need any special tools, or is the special tool really just a pushy stick…?

You just need something to push the retaining clip in square, I use a deep 1/4' drive metric socket, a bit of suitable sized wooden dowel would work just as well.

Aaaaaaarrgghh!!!

Just checked the delivery and the wrong fricking parts again!! :banghead:

No O ring, just this teeny little thing along with the pinion seal...

Doing my head in now. :angryfire:

Note to self, check delivery off line by line. Another lost day.

Anyone know the correct OD/ID of the o ring in question? No joy finding one in the UK and need it for Saturday, so going to have to try and source from a local supplier and hope I can find something that fits. It’s the one circled in the pic. No joy on wanted thread.
