Disc Brake Conversion

Post by Rebel »

I'm looking to convert my front drums to discs, but, what are the best kits to use. I've found the below from MP Brakes and was wondering if they are ok, or should I be looking at buying from somewhere else?

the calipers off your 94 toyota hilux will bolt up to mopar disk brake spindles but you will have to use a metric sized rotor of about 10 inch i.e about the same size as the hilux.

and you might if you have hilux calipers off a solid rotor car need to clerance the slot with a grinding disk for a vented rotor.

its a bit heath robinson but it costs little and works well

alternatives would be 4 pot jag XJ calipers but only with 15 or 16 inch wheels. they are massive massive and heavy.

or princess calipers

all have lug mount based on a 3.5 inch bolt spacing like the bracket used on mopar slider calipers does

Think I'm right in saying I need to get a proportion valve, would it be better to use a servo or not though. At the minute it's a non servo drums all round set up

Do you have 14 or 15 inch wheels, only OEM discs will fit with 14".

Get the biggest diameter disc you can find / afford that will clear the wheels and you will not need a servo.....

I went round this loop for ages (in a car that already had mopar factory discs) and in the end decided to go for all new.

First job was to get hold of drum spindles (which you wont have to do) and then I got the Wilwood kit. 4 pot calipers and 12" (corrected!) rotors. They were bigger than the originals anyway and helpfully stated 'fit under some 15" wheels :) ). Nah, diagrams are excellent - they help you measure with confidence.

Anyway, point is the kit was really good. Clear, complete, every nut, bolt, wheel bearing, mounting bracket etc etc you need. Literally follow the instructions and join the dots. Looks the business and most importantly DOES the business.

I sold my old rotors/calipers/spindles to a member on here - so a 'wanted' ad might bring a response if you had heart set on mopar originals...?

Failing that, Dave999s hilux hack is a really good bet - I just got the worries over finding myself with another set of calipers to rebuild and more pipes to make etc - so took the easy (but ££) option.

Basically, you pays yer money, you takes yer choice. But if you can stretch to it, the wilwood kit was a breeze really. American engineering and it fitted... amazing. :)

Thanks Pete, Morgan,

Forgot to say I have 15 inch wheels. The wilwood kit does sound very good and impressive that it's a fit straight out of the box.

This (long and slow) thread covers it and there are some pictures of the wilwood stuff (hubs, rotors, calipers etc) on page1.

In fact, just reviewed it, and from bottom of page4 you can see the wilwood going in. Might be worth a look.

As I'm planning to work on the brakes, I suppose now would be a good idea to think about a line loc, which is best to use though.

Manual or electric, lock the front brakes on or lock the rear brakes off?
