Diff carrier gaskets

Post by Gareth »

Due to reinstall the 8 3/4 diff assembly back into my rear axle this weekend. What do folks usually use in terms of gasket sealing? I have the necessary gasket but what's best practice? Clean surfaces and dry gasket only or gasket sealant for good measure? :-k

Clean mating surfaces with a good scraper or razor and degrease and then I have always put Blue Hylomar on both sides of all my gaskets for the last 40 years !! Seems to do the Trick :)

Or a thin smear of silicone works as well but I would leave that to go off overnight before filling it with oil.

Hadn't considered Hylomar. I used a thin smear of black silicone last time and it was fun trying to separate it from the axle this time around which is part of the reason I'm considering my options.

Cheers Blue, that's what I did last time. Didn't leak so I'll probably do the same again.
