50 year old Deltic

Post by shifter »

This things been hauling trucks from Blyth docks to the aluminium smelter at Lynemouth (where I work) for the past fortnight.
Its a Deltic diesel called "Royal Scots Grey" and it was built in 1961.
Good to see something of this age still earning its keep and not on a heritage railway or museum.
There has been something on this site before about Deltic engines so it might be of interest to someone.

these things retired in the early ‘80’s!! Due to an increase in traffic for GBRf they are short of locomotives[LOL, Ed]. A deal has been made to use this Deltic on 2 round trips a day between North Blyth & Lynemouth. This deal should see this Deltic work these trains till about July

There is a Deltic in Ramsbottom thought that looked familiar

You have the Stone age,the Bronze age,the Iron age, even the Power age:D but this is the age of the train.

If memory serves me right,I believe there was a fleet of 22 Deltics.I used to watch out for them on my trips up to my grandparents in York. They all had different names.
