WHERE (physically) is the splice ?

Post by morgan »

This splice. The bypass-the-ammeter one ?
I spent hours yesterday and couldnt find it. I didnt want to untape the whole damn lot.

Does anyone recall exactly where it was on their cars (like 'behind the ashtray' or 'right next to bulkhead' or whatever.

Actually I dont need the splice itself, but I do need to enter the system between the splice and the bulkhead - to make sure its still included when I run new wire in.

Those who have done it will know what I mean. Such a simple process but what a pain to implement !

Any clues gratefully received...

So right next to the bulkhead ? i.e. where it emerges from the connectors up above the pedal box ?

That could make it easier if the whole connector can be removed from firewall and I can drop it down to crimp/solder etc.

Up above the brake booster on the engine side of the bulkhead.

I know I have seen it. Just don't remember where. But I have a feeling it might be up there.

the black wire that comes from the alternator , goes through the fire wall block connector , then to a multi splice , ( the copper strands are actually compression fused OEM & wrapped in cloth tape ! ( not soldered )
each wire goes to
ignition switch ,
accessory power to fuse box ,
headlamp switch
amp meter (black)

the splice is in the main ( Dash ) harness , roughly between where the ignition switch wires entre the harness & the radio connection !! your better off removing the whole harness & un wrapping it out the car !

see pictures below for location !!

Steveo - that's perfect. Thanks for the effort.

Also gives me a decisive way forward. I'll post pics up onto one of the historic threads on this matter when I do it.

What I am going to do if effectively a 'hybrid'.
2 fusible links running off the stater relay as per the 'mad electrical' method. One for the main alternator which will not route through the bulkhead. The other will use the doubled up circuit as per madelectrical but crucially will continue to use the existing connectors.

That way I don't have to cut into anything cabin side of the bulkhead - it can be tackled at a later date.

In effect it will be this - (diagram)

Thankyou chaps. Very helpful - my head is now in order.

Yep. Adapted from there. Just avoids doing anything other than splicing ammeter - by continuing to use bulkhead connector for connection to cabin loom.

I must have found it when I pulled all the dash wiring out then. I did remember it being all wrapped up in the harness like that though.

Can't trust my memory.
