Tyre size help please

Post by Steve »

Anyone able to tell me what width tyres will fit 15 x 5 1/2" steels properly please?

My New Yorker has 235 75 15s on 15 x 6" rims and they look good. I have a set of 15 x 5 1/2" steels for my Polara.....will a 235 tyre fit ok or would I have to go to a 225 or 215?? Will the 1/2" difference in rim width make that much difference? Will the side wall bulge too much with a 235 section tyre on that size rim??

Thanks for your help in advance

Cheers Steve :thumbright: :read2:

Hi Steve - we've got 235/75x15 on the back of our Polara, on 5.5's. They do bulge a little but not as much as some you see.

If I can find a pic that shows it, it'll post it up here. If not, I'll ask Stu to take one tonite! :)

As a rule of thumb I try to match tread width to rim width, that always looks "right". You can probably go up to an inch wider on the tread and it still look OK and be safe, especially with a high profile tyre.

Gotcha Blue...thats a handy rule of thumb by the sounds of it....ive put my New Yorker wheels on the Polara for a look see....its amazing how much better they look than the 14" wheels :thumbright:
