Original Steering wheel and horn ring attachment - 1962 on

Post by dubvalman »

Hi Chaps,

Would like some advice and guidance - I have located a real good ecellent condition steering wheel and and excellent horn ring - these I got from separate suppliers and now they are here it is obvious that there must be an intermediate part which brings the all together.

I have numerous manuals for the vehicle and manuals for models adjacent and subsequent models. Unfortunately they do not show the assembly for the steering wheel and horn ring.

Can some one shed light on the factory assembly for the steering wheels as fitted to the 1962 - 1968 Valiants.

Thanks and best regards
Steve

Right

firstly I have no idea, your car is the oldest valiant in the club and we haven't had any like it for years.

have you found the site 1962valiants in oz that bloke will know.....

anyway

Chrysler being Chrysler never changed a thing that worked unless they had to

mine is totally and utterly different by 10 years. Aussie Tuff Wheel

but some things stay the same....

normal scheme of things

steering wheel (earthed via the shaft to the steering box and chassis)

the actual horn switch bolted down but insulated from the wheel. part of it is a metal contact that hits the metal centre of the wheel when pressed, normally held off by springs. the switch has the wire up the steering column connected to it

the bit that you use to press the switch (i.e your horn ring attached to the switch)

a trim piece with whatever the mopar division involved was using as a logo at the time.

So I thing you are missing the switch which is a bit like a spring sandwich

i.e. the switch base bolts to the wheel (earthed)
the wire goes to the moving part of the switch (insulated from earth unless pressed when it earths out and completes circuit. toot toot)
the horn ring bolts or is press fit to the moving part of the switch, usually chrome plated plastic or pot/monkey metal (shiny cheep cast scrap)

can only see pictures on my phone and my phone has a very small screen (that's due to a problem with my work PC not your pictures)

Hi

Thanks but I know how it works, what I am looking for is the identity of the retainer for the horn ring to wheel.

Looking at the horn ring I would be sure it is a retainer with three clips - I have located a few on the Internet and before investing in one want to be sure it's the right one.

A photo of the right one would be excellent - if some one knows which one it is and could post a photo that would be really helpful.

Best regards
Steve

you might need this

http://bluestarperformance.com/horn-swi ... 8-nos.html

EDIT

change that to WILL need a switch possibly like the one above

62 aussie will be using 60-62 US stuff because they were CKD kit builds.

but if you are really stuck there must be an official dealership manual or parts book for one of the cars that year that illustrates properly.

or if you add a link to the thing you think you need it may ring some bells with someone
