rolling road tuning

Post by Matt »

I got back this evening from a daytrip to South Yorkshire, where I had the Charger rolling-road tuned by John Sleath.

John was a top chap and extremely helpful.

He supplied a new carb which was bolted on , and a quick inital setup done.
After that it was onto the rolling road to fine tune the carb and ignition.

The car's running a Megajolt EDIS crank-trigger ignition. I had previously loaded a very basic map myself just to get the car running. Took John no time at all to do it properly and fill in all the gaps, using a laptop in the car.
Interestingly enough the 440 is almost stock and still likes around 20 degrees of advance at idle. (the Megajolt cranks at 10 degrees and only advances to 20 once the engine has started - so no starter kickback)

Anyway the throttle response is now instant, and it's also quite a sight to see the car accelerate up to full chat.

John works with all sorts of engines/carbs/efi systems/ignitions and certainly knows Chrysler V8s as he does a fair bit of Jensen stuff. Well worth a visit if you want to get the most from your setup.

That was fifteen years ago you sold me that car Dunc....

The object was to set timing map and fuelling throughout the whole range of load and rpm, mainly for driveability on the street.

I didn't pay close attention to exactly what John was doing but he ran the car relatively lightly throughout the rev / load range for quite a long time, and I only saw one or two hard pulls.

hmmm. I still need to get this sorted too. 155 miles. Would be furthest I've ever tried to take her - not sure I dare ! :) Mind you - with fuel at these prices its the time to try - might get up there on 10-12 gallons.

How did you get on with mounting up the megajolt trigger wheel

I've had one sitting there for 6 years and never got round to it

my fat 2.5 inch deep balancer puts the trigger wheel mounting studs in line with the engine fan so i've never progressed

mind I have other things get in the way of progress.

I should get on with it all I need is the hub I had made up by TrevD drilled and helicoiled so I can use button headed fasteners rather than studs and nylocks which hit the fan.

silly really easy overcome

is yours the 2 map one with on the fly switching? I liked that idea (swap maps when some kind of forced induction kicked in)
before I realised all my plans greatly exceeded my budget and skill :)

handy also for LPG/petrol combo LPG to get there/petrol for fun at the track type set up

I got the hand build kit. its just a nice thing for little outlay killer application of some decent ford fiesta or probe bits.

got the trigger wheel with the closest ID. Slipped it over the pulley , trued it up and tacked it.

Checked radial runout on car using feeler gauges between teeth and sensor. - bearable at about 40 thou.

Put bigger tack welds on afterwards

Job done. Although I should really have the pulley balanced now.

Yes it's the two-map version , although one is all I'll be using !

This ignition system is just amazing. Totally programmable, and uses production line parts - so it should never go wrong. Goodbye distributor.

Will start another thread on the whole Megajolt/EDIS thing when I get a minute, as I'm really impressed.

yeah I was fired up when I got mine

seemed to be excellent

made me look at MSD products and think NO WAY

well not for me anyway

practically a coil per plug
1/4 degree accuracy with no timing scatter at higher RPM
smooth interpolation between load points

whack the last load point back to 0 BTDC for soft rev limiter

YES its good

think Gavin worked with some of the guys at ford who had something to do with EDIS remembering him saying there was EDIS stuff about when I was looking fro EDIS 6 modules

I purchased a full plate trigger wheel and the coil mounts from triggerwheels
got it balanced and bored and sent to Trev to make ally hub. he also slotted it so I could move it 30 degrees

its a nice solution apart from the afore mentioned unexpected clash with the fan

didn't want to get into electric fan and 90 amp alternator

we'll see once the motor is working nice and I get an MOT.

think you can only buy pre assembled these days

still looks good for the money

If I wasn't so anal about the Valiant being a nostalgia build I'd defiantly be using a system like that, bit of effort in the first place but then you've really got a great ignition system.

you can still hide it

orginal Ford set up for fiesta and escort had a pattern of holes drilled in the back of the flywheel with the pickup through the bell housing mounting flange

I'm guessing there is enough space round your starter motor to poke a pickup

or you mount it under the car through the flat flywheel cover that fills gap from crank seal to clutch/fly wheel under tray.

Not sure what the offset is on a flywheel on a big-block is but could be potential to use longer clutch plate bolts to hold on a tabbed 2-3mm thick ring with holes drilled in it.

plug leads and coil might need some disguise

might be easier just to get a 36 small holes drilled and join 2 of them together

mount an original Chrysler dizzy pickup

other option would be a 72-2 toothed wheel for a dizzy if you could get a pickup with good enough resolution

you loose accuracy (timing chain slop) but gain on old skool looks use an ELB dizzy with no advance mechanism

job done

easy to say

probably not so easy to do
