white powder ??!!

Post by mustangbooks »

I was just trying to work out why my wipers don't park and only have one speed, which is usually an earthing issue (but doesn't seem to be in my case  ), and I discovered something strange behind the wiper switch. There's a little rectangular unit attached to the side of the wiper switch, which appears to be full of white powder, which falls out when you tap it!

...so I'm wondering what the little unit is, what the white powder is, and whether this is anything to do with the non-park issue?

Also, what would the street value of this white powder be if it turns out to be narcotic?

I think my wiper switch had a similar rectangular unit, but no powder came out of it, probably some sort of resistor?? if yours is ‘leaking’ it may have failed, hence your wipers not parking …

I guess it does a similar thing to the ballast resistor on the ignition, reduces voltage, on the wipers speed 3 will get the full 12v and speed 1 and 2 have reduced voltage to slow down the wipers

Yes, and the purple reindeer with socks instead of ears that appeared said not to worry about the wipers, as they're only asparagus.

Not very helpful, really.

wiper motor has 2 coils

I Think it achives 3 speeds by

combinations of switching power to 1 or the other or both coils with this resistor in series for the slower speeds

resisor is a coil of wire encased in a tunnel of ceramic, filled with heat conduction powder and capped at each end with some plasticy glue to keep out mositure
loss of the inside stuff means its life may be limited

cut off the resistor and replace

25 ohm wire wound 5 watt ceramic is a couple of quid from maplins go for 8 or 10 watt if there is space orgianl was 3 or 5

this is stolen shamelessly off another site

A --> f2 in test one is your park function i think

There is a test for the switch that can be done with a continuity tester or an ohmeter. To do this test, on the back of the switch, the terminals are marked with an"A", "B", "B/U", "F1", "F2", "P" and "R1". In the tests, "Ground" is the switch casing.
While in the "Off" position there should be continuity between
B to B/U
B/U to P
A to F2
F1 to Ground

"LOW"
B to B/U
B/U to A
A to F1
F2 to ground
P - open

"Medium"
B to B/U
B/U to A
A to R1
F2 to ground
P - open

"HIGH"
B to B/U
B/U to A
F2 to ground
P - open

Testing the motor

The motor only has two speeds, high and low. The medium speed is a variable speed, which is configured by the switch varying the voltage to the motor.

"Low"
Connect the motor housing and the green wire to ground
Bridge the brown and red wires
Connect either the brown or red wires to 12v
Motor should turn slowly

"High"
Conect the motor housing and the green wire to ground
Connect the brown wire to 12v
Motor should turn fast

"Park"
Connect the motor housing and the red wire to ground
Bridge the brown and green wires
Connect the blue wire to 12v
Motor should turn backward, then stop in park position.

Just resurrecting this ancient thread, as I finally replaced my wiper switch with one I got from Duncan last weekend. It seems all my white powder has left the building...

Old switch:

...unfortunately replacing the switch didn't fix the problem of the wipers not parking, so I'll have to double-check the switch panel is earthed properly and possibly look at getting hold of another 3 speed wiper motor.

Is it me, or does it look like someone has just hacked the wiring together on the motor, so it's just 'on' or 'off'? I certainly can't see a blue wire to test! There does only seem to be one speed.

The switch housing is definitely earthed by the way, I have triple checked.
