Prop ID

Post by lough3969 »

So can't find a big casting number on my prop case.
Its obviously a 489. but I can't make out the last year letter at the top looks like 1962 but i don't think they made them then... is it maybe 68? or is that still to early? Is this an unusual early case?
Any how I'm assuming it is the same ring and pinion as a 489 as I'm looking for a 3.23 Ring and Pinion for it... it already has a locker in.

I Think you can put any gear set out of a 488 or 489 stamped centre
but there are two sizes of yoke and 2 or 3 splines for the yoke/ pinion end.

someone, might have been Morgan, had issues getting the right bits for the right yoke a while back

worst case you'd need gears yoke and conversion UJ
best case you get a pinion with a spline that fits yours and you don't need the new yoke

there is a big 72 stamped on it?

the other number has too many digits to be a date code

10825 ?? 1082 would be 108 days into 1972

so don' think that's a date

if it has cones its 70 onwards I think

the date i saw are the numbers at the top left... you will see 196_ something..

the 72 i think is a Chrysler star then a 2... sorry the image is a bit compressed for posting with ease.
