MOT exemption
Now avialable on the DVLA website. If your car is on SORN just go to the Tax my car section and it’s really easy.

Re: MOT exemption
I've just taxed mine. I thought I had to declare it MOT exempt at a post office the first time but as you say you can just do it online.

Re: MOT exemption
Did my tax at the end of April to start May 1st 18.
MOT ran out on 18th May.
Just went through and Re-Taxed the car using the Reg and the V5C number.
It warns you that they may recharge you the 12 month premium (Thats £0 so no problem).
When you accept that it takes you to the page where you can declare it MOT exempt. Did this and submitted.
Says car taxed from May 1st 18.
My car was already taxed and out of MOT, and i could do it. Will do a MOT check in a few days for the system to catch up and be certain.
Not sure you can do it if the car is currently on SORN though?

Re: MOT exemption
Both my cars were SORN'd as the MOT's had run out. Went online this morning and taxed them both and that was that.

Re: MOT exemption
You can also fill in form V112 and take it to a post office to declare the car MOT exempt.
You can download it here.

Re: MOT exemption
I heard some mention on bookface that if the car has no mot / tax at the time of filling out the form it will become VHI status permanently. Although if you have tax / test on it then the VHI status is for 1 year only?
I currently have plenty of tax and test on my car so waiting to see what the implications of VHI are before I make a move.

Re: MOT exemption
all 3 of my cars were currently still taxed, but went on line to re-tax them & declared they were mot exempt (well this worked for 2 out 0f 3 of them) now when you check the mot status is now says details not known ie this means its now mot exempt

Re: MOT exemption
It worked for me. I just renewed the tax on my Challenger convertible.
Re: MOT exemption
That sounds good then. I taxed the Challenger last month, so thought I would need to wait until next year to declare it MOT exempt.
Maybe not then, I think I'll go have a try.

Re: MOT exemption
Just tried this for my Charger and a couple of my bikes, all return "Not Known" status ... I can't believe DVLA would have assumed they are HVI Compliant, but not complaining.
Think I will still fill in the form and send it in as a matter of course

Re: MOT exemption
Still deciding whether to MOT or not, but I usually renew the tax over the phone, so how would that work ?
Re: MOT exemption
mine was SORNed and had no MOT since last September. Went and did the tax and MOT the other day when it became exempt, Tax is showing fine, but the online checker says "no info", but its green, so i assume its all ok. Probably wont be driving it for a while yet but it should be ok.
Re: MOT exemption
OK, I'm confused. I went online to the tax my vehicle page and entered reg# and V5C reference number, and it said "Vehicle details could not be found". However I did the a reg# check and it correctly recognises the vehicle and says it has SORN, and for the MOT says 'no results returned'. The log book (V5C) has the taxation class as historic vehicle. Any ideas??
