I just want to do the bare minimum at this point Dorian it has 80 psi oil pressure at idle cold but that drops to about 10 when it's hot which needs investigating. It was supposed to have been rebuilt a couple of years back, it's certainly been apart not so long ago so I just need to see what I have. Valiant just needs the doors putting back together and a bit of interior reassembly and job will be a mediocre 'un...

Strange about the oil pressure... any thoughts as to what it could be?
Please keep taking snaps and updating this thread I’m in suspenders as we near a chance to see this out and about!

It might be just worn bearings although I would have thought the pressure would be low even when cold if that’s all it was. It had one of those god awful Edelbrick carbs on it that was flooding like buggery when I got it, so wiped bearings is highly likely.

align bored
bore gauge out and measured top to bottom side to side
bearing crush checked
clearances measured and plastiguaged
0.002 on the mains 0.0005-0.001 on the rods as per the spec in the book
new cam bearings
lifters checked for size
O ringed oil pump
rotor clearance checked rotor to ring and to cover
spring shimmed to spec.
you can imagine my joy when apart from a few points higher across the board it is still the same
10-15 at idle when hot
soon as you hit the gas they go up to about 40-50 and the pressure relief kicks in to stop the pump gear winding off.
i came to the conclusion that flow mattered over pressure for the mostly on the road driving i do, i didn't want to pull it to bits again
I went for a race filter last time
motorcraft FL1-A Race yes its ford but its nice.

The low pressure dosn’t bother me it’s the 5 seconds waiting for the pressure to come up on a hot start that can’t be ignored.

ahhhhhhh......
anti drainback flap missing in the filter?
some of them look kinda rubbish. granted you can't see much peering through the holes...but you'd hope that the rubbery disk actually covered them when at rest

Got it all apart, it has been rebuilt. Ends and mains are just showing copper with no scoring or damage to the crank. Bores have no lip and a bit of crosshatch is still visible. Need to have a closer look at stuff but on the face of it no horrors. Block has some bad casting flash and the port match on the heads isn't great, bit of time with the die grinder will rectify all that. Plenty to get on with then...

Productive morning, rear end assembled and installed again for the last time. What we have here is an E body case narrowed to suit my choice of wheels and tyres, strange shafts to get 4.5" PCD and 11" B Body brakes. Would have preferred 10" drums as it might be a bit overbraked for the back, but thats what I had so we'll see. Diff is a 3.55 sure grip.

hi blue,
that's a nice looking rear end you have there (ooer missus ). re the big brakes you can always add an adjustable proportioning valve in line to the rear if it was an issue. we do wilwood lever and knob styles at work.

Noice.... is it a 489 or have you put a Dana in the Baracuda as well as the Valiant? Did you order it built or assemble it here. Only ask cause of the colour... which I like

Had to cobble it all together from parts I've been collecting over the last year or so. I painted the housing with the same orange paint I bought for the callipers and brake drums. Thought about painting the whole axle in it but I'm just trying to invoke the spirit of the early '70s rather than fully inhabiting them....

spirit of the 70's? i see no fog light mounted over the rear axle
