What is the purpose of this?
Can anyone tell me what this part plays within the electrical system.

Re: What is the purpose of this?
no idea
but given its position it would be good to know if you have airon....incoming air temp?
air too hot aircon compressor on, too cold comprssor clutch off?????
for economy
balance in car settings with ambient external air temp to not waste fuel compressing aircon gas when air outside air is cool enough
guess
or similar for ELB system??

Looks like its inside the door surround/jam. Interior light sensor ?
What colour are the wires ? Looks like bk/gn and red (or brown) ? Wiring diagram !

Morgan, it's looks like it's on the bulk head under the hood on the r/h/s.
Are we there yet dad ..... 10 to the gallon but worth it.

Re: What is the purpose of this?
Looks like the bonnet hinge and plenum on an A body, passenger side/aircon unit side of the top of an A body bulkhead , looks much like mine, I've never looked that closely at this part on B E or C, the rest of the car is usually more interesting.
Looks like it fits into the plenum just above where the leaves block up the drain holes..the special rust trap used to supply air to your aircon box / crotch cooler bucket/flap VENT thing
the broken plastic bucket thing that delivers wasps at 40 MPH up the trouser leg of wide shorts.
I'm thinking 2 coils of resistance wire under the black cover, like the resistor coils for your fan motor controller on a heater box, and a thermister or some such in that round bit
voltage divider and a transistor somewhere along the line
cold air- air-con clutch off- no additional cooling. hotter air - aircon pump on... additional cooling in the car
OR the only place nearly under the bonnet, where an ELB computer can get a real feel for the air temp outside, to help with cold start or cold running, so it can mess with the timing and position all those plastic air filter flaps to redirect exhaust manifold heat down the Carb.
air con or mid 1970s car??
still a guess. Vivid imagination and working from home.... bored....

Re: What is the purpose of this?
Looks like it’s part of emissions control. https://www.forabodiesonly.com/mopar/th ... is.454513/
Re: What is the purpose of this?
so it is all about air temperature
presume its the thermal switch (round bit, i.e a thermister and transistor circuit of some kind, a bi metallic strip is no use here) and the control electronics under the black cover) and it could have something to do with the flaps in the air cleaner although yours doesn't seem to have a vacuum connection
so ELB was a step too far in this case, just part of the emissions stuff that got enhanced by ELB later on
