68-70 Charger trunk extensions

Post by Matt74 »

I'm in the process of fitting some new trunk extensions and they don't fit tight into the bottom corner of the rear quarter wheel arch leaving a gap.
Is the gap supposed to be there to allow water to drain out in case it finds its way in there or should it be a tight fit all the way round?

I will add photo later on today.

Cheers

Matt.

Mines had a floor at some point but happy to post a pic if you show me exactly which bit ? They only spot welded it from beneath in some parts but I think its sealed.
Post a pic, I'll check it out...

Thanks Rob. Those images are not clear enough. It could be because I'm viewing them on my phone however they have a photo of the area I'm referring to. I've tried to upload it but when I click on add file my phone goes to camera :banghead:

I'll take a photo later!

I'm pretty sure now it should fit tight into that corner!

That doesn't look much of a gap to me. Replacement panels are never likely to fit perfectly, and that looks quite good to me.
The only question is which panel to bring in line with the other?
If anything I'd suggest the outer quarter panel is the one that has the incorrect profile, it looks like it hasn't folded around all the way, probably because the way the metal needs to shrink to curve around that corner, think of how a piece of paper would fold to make that shape, there is too much material, so some small notches will allow it to fold in to line with the trunk extension.

A few pics of un-restored rust free cars will help to show what the shape should be in this area.

Cheers Matt. I had already closed that gap up quite a bit. The driver's side was much worse and I had to extend the panel on that side and I've already made it fit the quarter properly.
I just had the thought that as the corner of the extension was so different to the quarter panel perhaps it was intended to be that way but I've now gone ahead with reshaping the extension on the passenger side and I'm happy with it now.
The quarter did need adjusting as well but not much.

I think the quarter panel looks worse in the photo than it actually is, a hammer and dolly brought it back in quite easily.
The driver's side is a bit sharper. I may pie cut and reweld that side yet.

Well I had a crawl around; its quite tricky to see (bits of mud, grass and melty-rubber) but I scraped a bit off and it looks like mine doesnt actually have the double-lip like your pic. Far as I can see they cut off the old extensions (cut the rotten bits out I guess) and then put the new quarters on, tacked them together and sealed (see red dotted line) But there is no gap for anything to flow out anyway; not that I can see. Perhaps its a single skin/double skin thing ? Sorry Matt - tried ! (see pics)
