70 440 6 pack GTX S/frame connectors
One for the mopar quiz
friend of mine in states has this car which is now running a hemi but its got subframe connectors welded in.
Did they ever offer that option, was it standard or is it aftermarket and does the hemi deter from the price as non matching and he going to sell it and it is a stunning car

Re: 70 440 6 pack GTX S/frame connectors
i don't think any factory car had a chassis member between front a rear sub frames
i have only ever read stuff about torque boxes being standard on some cars, not sub frame connectors
sub frame connectors always seem to be discussed in terms of aftermarket fitment
Cars with big motors
Cars with soft top
and all aussie and southafrican cars have torque boxes that hepled stiffen up the points where the subframe ended and became part of the main body ties the subframe to sill and boxes over the section where the front hanger for the rear suspension bolts on
similar set up at the front, ahead of the suspension cross member
i.e in this picture everything apart from torque boxes, highlighted in yellow would be aftermarket.
and torque boxes were reserved for hemi cars soft tops and cars destined places where the roads were rubbish or the people routinely drove like the dukes of hazzard

Re: 70 440 6 pack GTX S/frame connectors
Nothing came out of the factory with subframe connectors. On a car like that, anything non standard will affect its value. But adding a Hemi will make up for that I reckon if it’s a nice car.

My 68 gtx convertible has factory fitted torque boxes both sides merry Xmas all
watch out for the quiet ones ...
Re: 70 440 6 pack GTX S/frame connectors
I think all the Convertibles came with the Hemi Torque Boxes to (attempt to) stiffen up the vehicle.
My '71 Barracuda Convertible had them as standard - but no Subframe connectors.
On the Strip the car twisted like Pretzel.

Various cars came out of the factory with the front and rear spring torque boxes but nothing between to join them together.

Re: 70 440 6 pack GTX S/frame connectors
Pete,
Do you think subframe connectors would have prevented the car from twisting?
Just wondering as I intend to fit front and rear torque boxes to my 68 Charger. As this ties the frame rails to the sills I thought I would leave out the frame connectors.
Re: 70 440 6 pack GTX S/frame connectors
I swear you can feel the difference once you've fitted subframe connectors. I make my own from 2" square box but the US car tool ones that follow the contour of the floor pan must offer the maximum of rigidity, lot of work to fit though.

Re: 70 440 6 pack GTX S/frame connectors
I thought about making my own us car tool style ones myself Blue as I can get the steel folded at work.
I had some new ones but sold them years ago as I didn't think I'd own another Charger again.

Re: 70 440 6 pack GTX S/frame connectors
I have had several Mopars with Subframe connectors installed, and it makes a great difference.
The Race Challenger has 3" x 2" Box connectors cut into the original floor pan and welded full length - it makes for an immensely rigid structure.
You can jack up on one corner and the car will lift square across the frame.
When I used to jack the Barracuda convertible up at the front you could not open the doors!

Thanks Pete,
I'll add frame connectors as well then!

Good show - get that Welder out!
If you look at Blue's thread on the Polara you can see a simplified - but effective - method of doing it without cutting it into the floor.
Either that or you buy the contoured ones from the 'States and hope it fits Ok, and weld them in on both sides for maximum strength.
