I'm guessing it must be... it just doesn't make sense that the temp lever has a cable attached... the cable must operate a lever somewhere at the back that I can neither see or get to. There has also be something missing from the engine bay aa there are ports in the bay that suggest vac pipes should be connected and go onto something. Why so complicated??? A cable that goes to the distribution flap that simply opens and closes it would suffice... just like my old MK 1 Fiesta...
Dave sent a link to a company that does retro fit heaters etc... rather than trying to figure out what is missing /broken maybe cheaper to remove all the internals (matrix heater boxes etc) leave the control facia as a non working item. Fit one of there heater systems hide the controls under the dash and remove all the air con pipes pump etc off the engine.

i wonder if what it connects to has gone.....

if you have the red black and white pipes it is vacuum operated
pic of the under dash unit and i should be bale to tell

if these are not in evidence its either too new for me to understand or they changed their instalation sometime after 1971. i know the aussies didn't but the americans might have

do you still have the big cast iorn aircon compressor under the hood?

You could just get a heater box from a none aircon car any dart or valaint with the same style bulkead we are probably talking 67 onwards

you'd expect somone who has stripped a car to make it race ready to have a heater box knocking about....
its not the kinda thing you see on a stall or at a swap meet as they tend to be rusty ungainly and are never going to command the ££ that it cost to take them there in the firstplace skip fodder.....BUT that could be your gain.

with that you'd get

drivers side crotch cooling vent
the fan unit
the middle plenum
vents up to the dash vents

And you can use your old heat cool slider to fiddle the flaps
you will need some rubber caps to go in the holes where the aircon pipes went through
and potentially some foam insulation becasue the heater motor will be smaller and the hole in your bulkhead firewall will be too big

i know this works on an aussie car
can't see why it won't on a US car

the aussies used the heater from the 61-66 valiant on all RT cars made in 71 and 72 that had weber carbs becasue that early heater had a motor that did not stick through the firewall and get in the way of the carburettors.... all they did was bolted a plate over the firewall hole
thus a heater for an early bulkhead still bolted up trouble free to a later bulkhead
id suspect that the same could occur for a later US dart

but getting the things in and out has been decsribed to me as removing the car from the aircon rather than the reverse. it can be done but i'm guessing its not easy.

Thanks for all the info and help. I have swallowed some pride.. The place that's doing the rewire are also heating and air con specialists. We talked to get the air con is too cost prohibitive ( probably awkward to obtain certain parts ). He is going to remove all the air con bits and work on getting the heater working.

Same here, aircon box with aircon thingy removed and just the heater matrix left in.
