The Corvette and Cobra were both marketed as Sports cars so that’s answered as far as I’m concerned. What I see as being far murkier is why a COPO is fine but a ‘68 Hemi A body isn’t, I doubt Joe Public could have bought either new.

Ended up 9.10 @ 148. 1000+ hp with stock manifolds, 2 1/2" exhaust and an 850 carb, incredible ! :D

Dudek used to post on Moparts a few years ago and had quite a long (and interesting) thread IIRC. Of course he made his name with an E-Body so sounds like he has gone back to one!! The Vette controversy has been around for years so sounds like it is still going! Agree it is astounding what they can achieve whilst looking stock. They used to have to sound 'stock' as well, don't know if that is still a rule? But there is definitely plenty of voodoo in those cars - weird cam grinds and suspension setup which ordinarily wouldn't be used (or is even supposed to work), I believe they are set up to have the power come in after the launch as much as poss to cope with the limited traction. =D>

Pretty sure they use some sort of traction control / slew rate timing by monitoring the D/S rpm, any spike in the curve indicates wheelspin so the ign unit is programmed to reduce timing at that point. They likely also retard the timing @ launch too, easy to do with the digital ign systems available now.
There is a huge amount of work that they do to the manifolds, the advantage goes to stock aluminium intake manifolds here. They modify dual plane manifolds to single plane but they look like a stocker from the top. They also extrudehone the exhaust manifolds (or not as is claimed sometimes). High compression (14:1 +) is also used. It's still impressive.
