Re: PM not in my in box
if the sender sends it to you, and then deletes it from their "outbox" before you read it,it doesn't appear in your inbox.
but you will get the email to say they sent it.
when they press send the email to you is triggered
but a link to the content of the message just sits in their outbox and your inbox, at this point they still own the content of the message.
if they delete it from their outbox it no longer appears in their outbox and the link to it does not appear in your inbox because a link to a deleted item is worthless.
if they wait until you read it the link moves from their outbox to their sent items, they can't edit it or change it once it is in sent items because you now own it. you have read it....they can't go changing it now....too late
if they delete the content from their sent items, it has no impact on you because once you view it in your inbox, the forum records you as the owner i.e it is content that you will add to, next, a reply for example. So the orginal message with a space for you to replay, and detail about who to replay to, is now recorded as yours, and nobody but you can delete it. You have a copy of what they said, with their name on it, for as long as you need it.
Private messages don't work like email, nothing is actually sent anywhere, everything is managed and viewed in the forum, the only thing that moves is links to a piece of content and the right to update that content by replying.
apart from the notification emails which you can set to be triggered when any content listing your username in the forum is updated, they are not forum content.
your PMs are just a forum section that nobody but you has access to, by sending you a PM people are updating your own private forum section, as such if they want to delete the content they posted they can, while they still own it, and they own it, until you read it.
basically its all to stop someone sending abuse then hiding the fact that they sent it by editing what they sent after the fact, but also giving legitimate users the ability to correct something if they need to or add something if they need to or change their mind about sending before you have read it.
i.e i'll let derek know about XYZ, oh yeah..forgot, I told him about that the other night, he'll think i'm a right numpty, so i don't need to send the message anymore.
right i'm going to have to have a coffee to see if i can recover from my own "too much like my day job" post, yes indeed i can be a very tedious man

Confusing!
Hi, that was me. Im trying to find some history on a charger I picked up (uyn650s). I had a look on the forum and saw you had posted a reply on a thread that mentioned the car - sent you a message but I guess it never went through!
