Valvoline VR1
I needed to get some more engine oil for our 2 cars. Previously we bought a big container from Bicester with ‘classic oils’ 20-50 with high zinc content. Now this has just about run out I thought I’d try Lucas’ Hot Rod 20-50, but could only see that on eBay & Amazon at around £40 for just under 5L.
So I found Opie Oils, who I had used before. They don’t sell Lucas but currently have an offer on Valvoline VR1 20-50 (and other grades) at £30 for a true 5L. Not sure how long the offer lasts though. ZDDP = approx 1200 ppm.
I ordered 4 x 5L jugs and got free postage (I think on orders over £80).
I ordered Sunday evening and the box was delivered to work today. Which I thought was good service.

Chris Goodale is a Lucas stockist, worth giving him a shout next time your looking..
I use Lucas’ Hot Rod 20-50 and not had any issues.

Thanks Stu. I thought I’d recently heard of a good UK stockist for Lucas, but when it came to needing it I couldn’t remember
I’ll try to remember for next time

Pretty sure I got my last Lucas at the oil place at Bicester scramble.
Opie oils very good rep - I used to know the owner through cars - he was on the RX8 committee in the early days.

Hi all,
I'm looking to get the VR1 for my Charger as it's on offer. My question is how long will it last unopened? I was going to get two 5L containers, but due to the ' low' mileages that I/some of us do per year, it would be a few years until the next oil change. Any thoughts?

Re: Valvoline VR1
Immediate thought is "Change it anyway" - just sitting they take on moisture etc - I change mine at LEAST once/yr.
Sometimes it comes out clear ! Less than the price of a fill up - its small beans. Just change it anyway.

Thanks for your help Morgan, good advice, I'll get that done as soon as the warmer weather comes around.
Re: Valvoline VR1
Google says 2-5 years shelf life for unopened engine oil, 6-8 for synthetic. Usual caveats about storage temperature etc.

with more than 1 engine in the pipeline i recently bought this. zddp at 1500 ppm. i've used it a few times now, as well as their gear oil (both lsd and not and auto trans fluid) they always deliver on time too.

I’ve used thier transmission fluid for years. I didn’t think you had an engine in a car long enough to need oil Neil

Re: Valvoline VR1
Back in 2010 i drove a 57 Cadillac Convertible to Vasteras, Sweden for the Power Big Meet, before i went i serviced the car, gave it an oil change using Duckhams Classic, the stuff in a metal can that pours dark green, during the 1000 mile each way trip the car was burning a pint of oil every day of 300 miles or so of driving, leaving a fine oil mist on the back bumper. On returning home i resigned myself to the fact that the engine was tired and would want rebuilding at some point.
In 2013 i did the same trip in the same car, i had planned to use a different car but sold it a week before leaving so had no choice, gave it a service before leaving, this time using Valvoline VR1. Over the entire trip the car burned virtually no oil, less than half a pint the whole trip.
I havent used anything but Valvoline VR1 in any of my cars since.
I sold the Cadillac to a friend in 2015 and its still going strong on the same engine, running VR1, its made the trip to Sweden again since , the long way down since the Denmark ferry stopped running, using virtually no oil.
