Hi Neil
Unfortunately my original crank is the tough N cast Jobbie and is in excellent shape, however it’s been cut 40 under and there’s just zero 40 over bearings available now,

Far Eastern Cast cranks have a bad reputation for being rubbish, it would seem a Forged one is one way of lessening
the likelihood of a broken crank??
I personally have very little experience in the oily parts and have been out of the reconditioning side for absolutely bloody years,
Pulled loads of fords and chebbies when I was younger and in the marine trade,
So now I’ll be reliant on local machine shops,
There’s a engine centre the specialise in balancing etc,
Located in Essex so I could drop off and collect to remove some of the worries that postage gives one!
But yea your obviously correct I don’t need a race type motor, just a strong reliable 400hp,
I could just rebuild it with all the stuff I’ve already got,
But putting it back together with used and obviously worn shells would cause me sleepless nights !

Talk to Chris Goodale, I bet he can supply you with a decent crank at a price that won't keep you awake at night.

His quote was virtually identical to summits
Which to be honest is good,
I guess for pure street use and general rumbling around a eagle or scat cast crank should be fine,
They are half the cost of a forged Jobbie,
But when one factors in a set of forged rods, pistons rings shells, balancing and any required machining etc
The difference would be around 600 quid ?
So I’m thinking as always, “ buy once cry once”

Finally getting some colour on the turd
Pleased with my colour choice,
I’ve gone for Porsche Grandprix White,
A late 70’s RS colour , absolutely spot on for GM Polar but a shade cleaner,
And more importantly reproducible, as it’s a catalog colour

ok, so i did what i always do with hard to find bits, i looked outside the box. on the real steel (uk) website they show details of the pontiac engines that shows several have the same 3" mains as the 400.
Years cid Bore Stroke Main C/Rod
1980-81 265 3.75” 3.0” 3.00” 2.25”
1955 287 3.75” 3.25” 2.50” 2.25”
1977-81 301 4.0” 3.0” 3.00” 2.25”
1956 316 3.9375” 3.25” 2.50” 2.25”
1964-67 326 3.719” 3.75” 3.00” 2.25”
1963 326/336 3.78” 3.75” 3.00” 2.25”
1957 347 3.9375” 3.5625” 2.623” 2.25”
1968-77 350 3.875” 3.75” 3.00” 2.25”
1958 370 4.0625” 3.5625” 2.623” 2.25”
1959-66 389 4.0625” 3.75” 3.00” 2.25”
1967-79 400 4.12” 3.75” 3.00” 2.25”
1961-66 421 4.09375” 4.0” 3.25” 2.25”
1967-69 428 4.12” 4.0” 3.25” 2.25”
1970-76 455 4.15” 4.21” 3.25” 2.25”
so the search continues....
summit racing show 0.050 mains? that'd do with a grind of the mains.

hope this helps :thumbright:

i always check the King bearings catalogue
dunno which engine you have i just went with the biggest pontiac engine for 1970.....

if i have the wrong motor have a mooch in the catalogue...
you used to be able to look for bearing based on diameter and thickness as well. handy if you a putting the wrong crank into an engine. The catalogue used to be really hepful...

https://www.king-catalog.com/catalog-fi ... mode=table

MB5523AM up to +40 for standard bearings same or better than OEM

the race ones top out at +20 (some special aluminium magic, less forgiving but last longer under strain)

i have used XRN (see below) in the past to get me odd sized Australian engine specific bearings, from the King bearing range i.e less than 80,000 engines of that type made, obsolete and badly supported since 1982. still managed to get me the bearings i needed

they either get them from King in the USA or the orginal king bearings factory in israel
might take a month, but hey, waiting costs nuffin...

XRN cater to jag owners and the seriously "vintage" crowd so a request for a bearing-set in their next order should not get them flustered

UK Imexpart Limited West Yorkshire +44 1977 553936
UK MAR MOTORSPORT UK Stourbridge +44 845 680 5195
UK Engineparts UK London 01708 890494
UK XRN Surrey +44 (0)1483 861777

Other option is BOP engineering in the US he gets small runs of hard to find things made... i use his pontiac rear main seal in my mopar motor
