Well I've not much in the way of an update what with the holiday season and all but we're still chipping away at it.
Had a look at mounting the alternator and PS pumps to get the belt runs set. Alternator was missing a bracket, appears it was always missing looking back at strip down photos. Didn't know what it looked like so fabbed up something that looks about right, I think
Refurbed the PS pump got both mounted and fitted with belts.
Got the breathers, bypass hose, distributor cap etc to get the motor running.
Now looking at refurbishing a small trailer into a engine test run jig which I'll then use to tow the motor back north come March/April time.
Some photos for you...
ignore the crusty alternator it's for setting up, there's a shiny new one in my parts pile.

Cheers for the comments
Got the engine and transmission fitted to my trailer/start up stand.
Fitted a new Flexplate along with new bolts for both sides of it as a previous ape had tried unsuccessfully to weld the original to the torque converter after I guess losing a bolt
Now just have to collect everything together to trying getting it started

Cool, don't want to teach you to suck eggs, but I am sure that you are aware that you need to break the cam in.

It's the original cam Pete, should be okay?

Thanks
Slabby's not been used for a couple of years. It doesn't need much but one project at a time

As long as the Lifters have been kept in exactly the same position is should be Ok.
Did you check that the Lifter bases were still convex and that the lobe height was consistent across the camshaft.
Also, did you check that all the Lifters spin in the block lifter bores Ok?
If you go through the case hardening in very short order and you will end up with lots of grinding paste in your engine...

Lifters were kept in the correct order,
Looked for noticable cam wear but didn't see anything, didn't know about convex lifters or lobe height
All lifters spin in the block.
Got me wondering about changing the cam now

Did not mean to spook you, it is a series of we go through at work before accepting or rejecting the cam and lifters.
If the lifters spin in the bores when you load them a bit and rotate the cam / rotating assembly and timing chain that is half the battle.

Not a good idea to run the trans dry, ignore me if youve already thought of that
