Steve, this is how the stick-on woodgrain Stu got from the local hardware shop (£few per sq metre) compares to the original pattern/colour. Good enough for me Tommy
Bear in mind, that original might have faded over the years, and whatever is available on the repro parts may not be 100% correct anyway



Quick update....
This kind of shows why Wheels Day would have been a struggle for us even if the weather had been up to snuff....


Stu's been soldiering (not soldering) on, as & when, ticking a few jobs off the list, tho it doesnt look like there's much progress:
tidying the wiring under the dash - ripping out old unused items like alarm, elec fan s/w, elec fuel pump s/w etc
fitting new wiper pivot seals - so much easier without seats, steering column & radio
drilled holes in tunnel for console mtg brackets,
fabricated trans shifter bracket - thanks to Blue & Roger for info
stripping/prepping floor for new lick of paint & carpet....

in situ, with shifter posn established so we could get bracket made (see below)


new bracket made, to be painted.... hope it works

Floor not too bad, just needs new sealer on the seams & a coat of paint

At least there's already holes for the rear seat belts that we bought last year (unlike the Polara, which we had to drill)

Wiper pivots removed & cleaned up (just wire-wooled)

New Laysons

Cracked on a bit more over the weekend.
First of all, thanks to Adam & Bob for offering use of (Adam's) hoist & (Bob's) truck, but we needed a smaller hoist so we could get the engine out then thru Stu's back gate, so thanks also go to Dave Long(shot) for loan of his folding hoist which fit in the back of my Alfa and then thru Stu's gate once the deed was done. And thanks also to Paul Knight, whose engine stand/frame we've had a few months while get our backsides in gear and get the darn thing out
All we didnt have (apart from experience & knowledge
) was a carb-top plate or chain-type-thing to attach to the hoist's hook, so put our trust in a bit of string wrapped around the inlet
Managed to separate the engine from the trans and started with the hoist but then remembered we hadnt undone the flex-plate bolts, so spent what seemed like the next hour jiggling/levering the engine back onto the trans enough to undo the bolts
With bolts undone, engine once again prised off the trans, next concern was would there be enough height between the top of the rad support & the underside of the garage door to fit the hoist, the string
& the engine. We were right to be concerned but it just fit with mm's to spare, and with some help from our sprogs (hope Mr Health & Saftey wasnt looking in) got it bolted up to the frame, which we clamped to an old Black & Decker trolley, so we could wheel it round to its high-security storage area
till we can get it down to Paul Knight's for a once-over.
Pleased how the day went, apart from the over-sight with the flex-plate - i know some of you do this on a daily or weekly basis but we havent done for donkeys years (engine was last out in 1990).
All that's needed now is the small matter of the rebuild.... then to put it back together.
Oh & fit the new front suspension parts we got from Beaver Bushes. Something else we'll be doing a bit of on-the-job-training for

Comon Drew get over here! 30th July to the 1st August 17th Mopar Nationals.
Rob sounds like a steep remembering curve mate have some engine paint that colour if your staying with the orange.
Are you going anorack with the builld?
Also have some original rocker covers and a Carter laying around somewhere

Not sure what Stu's daughter (in the pic) was thinking... prob more like "why have they dragged me out here, I'd rather be inside watching the tv, than trying to get a bolt thru a hole in an engine stand etc etc)". My lad was probably relieved to be away from all the girlie programs on the tv tho
Bob, if the car was originally a big block car, we prob would be giving it the anorak treatment but as it's a 318 car (long since gone) and as it's now got a 440, which they never came with (only 318/383/426), we'll just stick with 'original looking'.
Already got a set of steel valve covers (cheers Bacca!) but could do with the breather/pcv bits it needs. Dont suppose you got any of those?
Yes it'll be needing some fresh orange paint one day - I'll let you know nearer the day

5 months since i last updated this. You'd think I havent done anything since
You'd be right too....... well i havent done much, but Stu's been cracking on, when time allows.
Decided it was now or never for an engine bay respray, so Stu's managed to smooth off the layers of paint down to and beyond the silver Hammerite that was on the car when we got it, to get rid of the hammer finish that we've lived with for all these years.
He's found some one that can come to the garage and spray the engine bay with the car there - 'all' we need to do is all the prep.
Decided to take the bumper off yesterday to save the inside of it getting covered in overspray.
Still a bit more prep to do - underside of the k-frame, torsion bars, lower rad surround still need rubbing down, then primer etc before we're ready for matey with the top coat(s).
