for some reason my hood does not fit nice and flush, (doesn't shut completely flat) I have the catch on it's max limit of adjustment, is it a case of just elongating the holes so it will go lower in order for the lid to shut tight ? is this a sort of common occurance ??

They usually fit really well, check the limit stops (the round bump stop thingys at either side of the front of the hood, if they are set high it will never close right and you will bend the hood trying, there should be no reason to alter any of the factory holes.
