Well in most cases I think the age/mileage of the car would get you in the ballpark.

It would be better if they just put a plain normal date on there though wouldn't it? But if they did we would all know how old the tyres are. So it would have to be a legal requirement to do so. Which means someone has to raise a Bill in Parliament.

Maybe a word with a local MP would be wise?

I know what your saying Dave, but its a 1990 Honda 16i16
with 49,000 from new.
Those tyres could be,... if that video is anything to go by, 88 and 84 if supplied to the factory and the age would be less important
scary

Put two new fronts on the missus car about 4 weeks ago, one has a date 08 the other has not anywhere ....figure that out

I think the date code is not completely accurate as in some tyre just do not have it....i have been checking all my cars and some reletively new tyres do not have DOT date marks...and my 90's tyres do not have the triangle symbol after them....so are they 80's i doubt it but just needs simplifying.

Hmm got me worried now....
Will the Belve tyres expire before i get it on the road... :?

I've had the Truk 8 years, it still has 2 of the tyres it came with and they looked pretty old 8 years ago

Does this apply to bike tyres- now THATS a scary thought!!

I think i'll go check those numbers later, thanks Dave.
No-one will believe you...

I think the fronts are most important.....not sure about the skinny fronts on my Cuda now, i know ive had them on about 8 years ....got me worried now as well, as they are obviously past 6 years and definately carrying more weight than designed for

If I was in the business of making tyres,I would be very keen to tell people that tyres are dangerous after 6 years. I'd sell more new tyres.

It might apply if the cords in tyres were still cotton/canvas that rots, and those tyres were crossply.
Tyres stored correctly, right temperature,in the dark etc do not deteriorate to the extent that they are dangerous to use.
There are plenty of vintage commercials out on the roads with tyres anything up to 60 years old. Think of 10-15 tons at 40 mph on hot sunny days going to vintage shows.
