Seatbelts and the MOT

Post by yabadaba »

Guys, any idea what the MOT rules are on seatbelts? My '66 Polara has factory fitted lap belts in the front and rear, but I'm thinking it might need 3-point belts in the front to pass the MOT.

Lap belts are fine for the MOT.

That's right, you only need to have whatever it left the factory with.

Thats right,

I remember adding belts to my 65 Mustang years ago as the MOT tester at the time wouldnt pass it without.

Found out later he was wrong :(

Always pays to search around as different testers have different ideas :thumbright:

I remember one year my rear lap belts were sticking so i just pushed them all under the seat and claimed there were no belts.
It passed ;)

Thanks for the link, though I'm not sure I'm liking what it's saying :(

I might not be following this correctly...but if I am, this flowchart leads me to A, B & C apply (not greater than 2540kg and first used after Jan 65 but before April 1981) and the key for 'A' states...

"A belt which restrains the upper part of the body (but need not include a lap belt)."

So, I guess that unless I find an MOT tester that is as confused as most of us, it will fail with just the lap belts as they obviously don't restrain the upper part of the body.

Hmm....

Lap belts fail in post Jan 65 cars in the front. O.K in the rear. On a pre 65 car lap belts are testable for condition and operation but cannot fail for incorrect type. (Inspection applies to all belts fitted whether required or not for the test.

Paul is right- though my 71 car has lap belts in the front and passed last year. Guess its how fussy the tester wants to be or if he's an anorack.

My 66 Coronet passed with lap belts.I was told 'design limitation' can affect the mot now.
Opinion seems to be they are worse than none?
Considered fitting modern ones but no anchorage points in the roof on mine. The floor mounted type ,over shoulder, maybe but not sure any are safe with folding bench seat. :?

The rules are that lap belts are a fail, common sense is sometimes different but on paper lap belts do not cut it, sorry.
