“Having just had a near catastrophic accident i thought the best thing to do was a 176mph run”

Classic Will really. Doesn’t even shock me now.

Sorry for the late updates, lads.

In short, we struggled.

We built up a new engine and headed back to the track.

Sadly we did it again due to shift issues. We grenaded another engine at 92mph

This locked the rear wheel again and caused me to panic and grab the front brake.

Sadly in the panic, I grabbed the front brake so hard I locked that also :?

To be honest I only noticed when I couldn't see thought the smoke coming off the front tyre, lol

The bike skidded to a stop remained straight and felt ok

On a positive, the bike was stable and handled really well even with both the wheels locked :reindeer:

Ahhhhh yes I kept the throttle pinned  #-o

The Blown Gearbox put metal in the oil took out most of the engine and a brand new turbo with it

So we got back on the horse.

We build another engine

I decided that maybe it would be best to test the gear system on a dyno before going back to the track and conducting another stunt show

So off we went and got the bike on a dyno for shift testing.

We are now achieving full-throttle upshifts in 34ms

It is unbelievable how fast and violently it changes gear 8-[

Dyno was good and really did have a few eureka moments.

The control system is the latest and uses more advanced shift strategies than conventional systems.

Below shows Gearbox going up and down the box

So we headed back the track :drwho:

First run out the bike seemed ok steady away and a gentle 140mph

Will, it always amazes me you can walk, given your balls are clearly the size of watermelons.

Everything seemed ok sort of

We see that we are loading the gearbox up under the high loads, our gearbox position sensor is moving. (Pre load of gearbox)

So we had to do a run log it fold that back into our configuration.

Sadly most F1 teams have hundreds of engineers doing this, so it's slow, and mistakes happen.

The excellent picture below is from 10 of the best, with hundreds of people screaming at me as I stage on the line.

I'm just thinking I shouldn't have had that Cheese burger form the greasy van)

and well we Bananarama! it again

Changing from 3-4 funny noise shut down pulled the clutch in - Logs below

But I learnt what is the issue :thumbright:

Will 0 -- Engine 4 ffs

Engine out and rebuild it again

Found new broken bits and managed to do a input shaft this time joy

The "Bleeding Edge" of Technology, ehh??

Will, these motors are used a lot in 'conventional' drag bikes and I thought they were regarded as pretty bulletproof. Obviously not though (gulp).
Are these problems common, or is there something in your design that puts more stress on them?

Hundred per cent agree

I picked this engine due to being "bulletproof."

I think there are a few factors that are leading me to have issues.

1. The rear wheel is a huge rotating mass 5x that on any SSB (Super Street bike) I believe the higher gyroscopic forces outweigh the mass increase but, This giant wheel and tyre is very unforgiving on the gearbox when trying to unload and load the gearbox (change gear)

2. We are on a budget and using standard gears to take the relatively low powers we are running. We do have a billet gearbox, but father won’t let me run it till I have proven myself.

3. Mistakes I have made many and in the heat of the moment and most of the time I’m trying to run before I can walk…

4. Shift strategy. Today the SSB rider presses the shift button. A 100ms timer is initiated, which cuts spark, and the gearbox is fired into the next gear. Regardless of what happens 100ms later, the spark it lite and gunshot gear changes are heard. The new very advanced system has a different strategy - monitor gear position cut the fuel and ignition then once the gear is in and fully meshed lite it. resulting in a much faster shift than 100 ms. (ultimately the most rapid possible shift) There are also strategies for what happens if the gearbox doesn't go in and the back out a plan for a failed shift. This all has to be set up for 1-2 / 2-3 / 3-4 etc.; some gears go in faster than others / less torque in higher gears / Unburnt fuel in long manifold pipes causing backfires etc. etc. etc. etc. endless.

Sadly the reality is for the distances I’m running, a 200ms £5 kill box would be fine, but the ÉCU is designed to do it this way, and I’m now fully invested in the bleeding edge :)

The next plan would be full auto upshifts and launch and traction control.

Every time we grenade something, we find an issue and fix it. :D

What if you ran the output via an intermediate shaft that separate the Wheel mass directly from the Gearbox sprocket...
