Wheel terminology

Could someone please explain what 'back spacing' is please?
Im trying to get the correct size for my charger, whilst the rear quarters are stock the inner arches have been increased in size to accommodate the widest possible wheel/tyre combination.
The car will also run air suspension and sit very low
Any help would be much appreciated !

Backspace is the measurement from the wheel mounting face to the back of the rim.

American tyre manufacturers websites usually give tread width, section width (sidewall to sidewall) and on what width rim those measurements were taken.
Armed with that information and a tape measure you should be able to work it out. It's all a bit nerve wracking when space is tight and theres a lot of money at stake!

What Blue said, if you still have a stock width axle then you will need rims with a larger back space to use the tubs.
You can't have too much power, only a lack of traction!

Probably looking at 4.5 to 5.5" back spacing for 9-10" rears. Been looking at this myself and as Blue said, it's stressful. Measure twenty times and buy once :)

Thanks for your help chaps, i think i get it!... So the only way to calculate the rim clearing the arch, is to measure to the back of the rim from the mounting face, then measure forward to get my rim width?
