well done Blue... was the torque setting you went to correct?

Hughes claim it is but I have my doubts. After talking to a couple of engine building pals, 22ftlb seems more appropriate so that's what I've used. We couldn't come up with any good reason to go higher.

oowwuch!
Just a thought ?
Are all the bolts the same length?
Could there be any grease/oil in the hole or and debris?

oh! love that engine bay :plymouth:

Yes all the studs are the same length and threaded by hand into the head to equal depths, oil but no debris. Seriously, 30ftlb on such a small thread has me gritting my teeth, it feels way too much given a lifetimes experience of tightening things up with spanners.

Always best to go on instinct and experience. I always use a torque wrench but often stop short of the recommenced torque settings. I am not sure how accurate some instructions are, particularly on aftermarket parts.

hhmmm

30ftlb does seem a bit much for a 5/16' = 8mm bolt. When the Ford pinto head bolts are 12mm and the 1st stage of head tighening is 30ftlb for those.

After a quick look round, there seems to be conflicting information on the settings 25 and 30 :?

But this page is worth a read :-k

Yes but they are talking big block which use a larger bolt, Hughes say 40ftlb for those...

Having seen some of the mechanics over here, I’m surprised there’s a torque setting at all. I watch these guys work and they seem to operate on “time on impact” settings. They refer to them as Ugga Dugga’s. #-o

Blimey a year since the last update! Much has changed, Covid, retirement and moving to a smaller workshop for a start. After a bit of a think it was time to let the Valiant go, well some of it at least. Engine I am keeping and the four speed set up I will sell Separately. Royden has bought the car so it’s not going far, it goes in for paint in 2 weeks time and then I will be fitting another 408 with an auto trans. No doubt I’ll still get to drive the car so it’s all good.
