Charger Sportsman

Post by Bluey »

G'day to all
I purchased a few weeks ago by auction a Charger Sportsman which I suspect a lot of you know.
Thought it was about time I introduced myself, my name is Henry, and spent a lot of my life in Australia (mainly WA but also 6 years in Sydney Northern Beaches), now live in Kent.
A Holden man really, but also liked Chargers, saw the Sportsman online a few days before the auction, and thought what the heck you only live once....
Cheers
Henry

It's the white one, the purist in me says if should be in red and white, but I think I can live with the colour :)

WA - lived in Perenjori, Lesmurdie, Nedlands, Peppermint Grove, Cottesloe...

Guessing you are in oil and gas Andy... suspect we all feel we are in that industry with the cars we have...

if you want a spare BW35 and Converter i have one yours for £75, box converter and flex plate

its a low milage sat in a breakers yard for 40 years sized up linakges but good red fluid came on a hemi 6 but i need the converter housing for a transmission conversion that will probably never happen :)

came off a hemi 6 that had done so few miles it had no ridge or ware in the bores...car off road and scrapped probably due to fracture right through the exhaust manifold. and then numerose epoxy bodges

i'm never gonna use it mines got a 4 speed

i have a few bits n bobs

I am pretty certain that the aussie bw35 is different than the regular ones used in cars in the uk, also they buggered about within the aussie chrysler chargers and pickups n saloons trying different bits in and around the bw 35 so not easy interchange that one,,,,,,

Thanks for the welcome guys

Dave999, thanks for the heads up that you have a converter, will bare that in mind, need to get the car looked over before I get anything done to it. I was in Sydney late 1999 through 2006.

I do need to get a new pair of rear tyres , currently she has Goodyear Eagle GA – P215 65R14 96H, any suggestions ? - she has Simex SM800 – 215 65R14 94H on the front and they have a fair bit of tread left.

Yes aussie pete that is the car, not taken many photo's of it yet, but here is one...

I also have a Holden HZ Kingswood ute.

ahha I was in Sydney 2000 to 2004

Tyres
Hercules 235 70 R14 for the back on mine

and anything up to 225 for the front.

Bored at work so here goes a brain dump so you can get looking for bits you think you might need :)

yours has the 265 2 barrel engine using a carter BBD (Ball and Ball Dual 2 barrel)) (probably a hi-top, accelerator pump arm through side of bowel)( not via plunger through the top of the bowel cover al la Low top)

a V6 capri 38 DGES weber is supposed to fit ....never tried it.

engine will be 9.5:1 CR rather than then 10.1:1 that the RTs and Police cars got

think you are running Aussie mopar electronic (Email or Prestolite branded)

your alternator will be Email (Aussie prestolite licencee) or Bosch (prestolite local manufacture Bitsa this n that) (if its blue)

the fuel pump is the same as the slant 6
the dizzy is not and is Hemi 6 specific (4 mm difference in height from the body down)

Dizzy is bosch or lucas following a Bosch design for advance weights and vaccum advance

but the mopar design for the top armature the rotor arm and cap
its takes the standard slant 6/v8 magnetic pickup but the US magnetic pickup base is wrong so you need to swap and rivet a new pickup onto your old pickup base to get it to fit the advance plate

Slant 6 electronic reluctor stars can be made to fit

wiper motor is lucas
heater motor is mopar

you have BW 35 aussie style (toughend up like a taxi version Full rebuild kits from motospecs in syndey)

your tail shaft takes the same spline as the chrylser TF904
your tail shaft is longer than a 904 version

your rear trans mount is a 2 stud square mount as per 60s A body
later US abody spool and cross member can be fitted if you chock out the mount bolt with washers on the passenger side indentation

you should have the GOOD GOOD VJ VK cast iron Girlock slider Brakes at the front. these were also used on XA falcon and a number of holdens. buy pads for falcon or holden and pay 3rd of the price you would pay if you say its a Valiant, the Valiant set of pads is always the last set anywhere in Australia MATE!

hopefully not the Bananarama! Pin and Bush based VH version (also used on 65 66 mustang)

9 inch drums at the back mopar standard set up on a few US A bodys and all but the last valiants (that got finned 10 inch)

you will probably have a 2.92:1 ratio open Borg Warner Model 78 Diff

with 25 spline axles

if lucky you will have 3.23:1 ratio with Sure Grip LSD ( seperated cone based slip resistant a bit like auburn gear centre but better in repect to seperated cone. i.e can be rebuilt)

Moser can make you new axles so you can fit a 28 spline center out of a v8 holden/ gen III camaro (BTR 9 bolt).

RATECH Engineering do rebuild kits

if you want to go LSD let me know if you wnat to change ratio let me know i can assist in respect to finding parts in the UK SA and AUS

(but i keep forgetting you might be australian and therefore you will know where to get the bits and be all over M78 axles, sorry if i am teaching you to suck eggs)

hand brake cables are the same as 66 B body
axle is same width give or take 1/2 inch as a 66 B body

66 B body 8 3/4 would bolt right in excpet for tail shaft and UJ

Handbrake the same as US handbrake cables same as B body

Front and rear brake pipes are bendix.

You car uses small upper balljoints same as US A body

the lower are aussie specific BJ34 and BJ35

all other front suspension apart from idler and pitman arm are US pre 73 A body

wheel hubs and bearings are aussie speciific.
your brake booster is the same as many UK ones. i don;t have one so cant remeber if its lockheed or girling.

all trim and switches, aussie, but US swiches fit, headlamp switch is universal mopar 6?-89 just check pin numbers

internal door handles aussie
external door handles aussie
interior arm rest trims are smooth with no mock stitching
the plastics are 67 A body dart/Plymouth valiant.

Your steering box is the same as a US one in all but the orientation of the ballnut and the different case. life is easier if its manual you can't reorientate an auto box ballnut LHD to RHD. if its auto its 14.7;1 ratio if its manual ist 20:1 ratio

rear springs are Unique aussie charger length but follow the 60s US pattern in respect to hangers bushes etc (pedders/pedders UK do all the bits)

A body torsion bars fit the front

you have disk brake spindles and lower arms with the sway bar mounting

fuel sender is Aussie specific 12 volt and they were model specific in respect to year and gauge. the seal i i believe is 68 barracuda.
all other gauges aussie VDO
green gell caps for dash lights are US
Bulbs are easy.

heater is RHD

aircon is a PITA

Everything you may need is availble new or reconditioned apart from full body sections, most pot metal trim, interior plastic trims and igntion switches and some lenses.

Bosch starter motor is tooth specific to your ring gear
but its nose can be swapped onto any aussie Bosch starter

any aussie or US brake master can be made to fit if you need to, 2 to 4 bolt adpators and longer pusrod may need to be used

aussie cars used

lucas spade connectors
Mopar bullet connectors
and GM style connectors for bulkhead and various loom connectors

US stuff ususally has different wire colours and needs the aussie connectors soldered on

washer bottle is aussie specific but you can get mopar pentastar embossed US ones with motor in the same shape either manual pump or electric

battery tray, tray support and hold down can be replaced with US A body parts.

your upper suspension mounts are studded through the inner wing. if the bolts on the studs are loose your alignmnet goes all to cock. if you do them up too tight they snap.

drill through and bolt is then only option (this is aussie specific rough road upgrade over US A body)

Your oil filter will be Z9 (same as any small block or big block mopar same as Ford AFL1) or Z96 (metric PITA) Z96 mounting/coupler can be removed and replaced with the standard mopar one)

volvo 740 fit
80s landcruiser 65 75 series fit

wipers follow the british classic car model. blades, arms, blade holders (usually too short) can be had at a swap meet near you any day of the year, and some Halfrauds

Struth Daves more dumpy than South Bondi beach!
Aussie wife and lots of time down under... love the look of your charger. Bit of plaid on any interior always adds a touch of class! :thumbright:
