New rad going in as well a trans cooler. Thanks again to Ash for providing it and the fittings. Bumper was a pain getting off but all is well. Will finish off tomorrow hopefully a nice new rad is the fix and not expensive head gasket

Nice new Rad and Trans cooler finally all fitted and the car was put back together. Everything was looking well, took it out for a test drive after letting it idle and flush through. Started smoking/steaming and pouring fluid out of somewhere, when i pulled into a car park the power steering felt like it had gone too.

Let it cool for an hour and the car felt like i was manually turning the wheels it was so stiff. Rang the RAC, was told an hour, hour passed and the bloke rang telling me he was an hour away. Tried getting home again (After letting it sit for 2hrs) steering was fine but when i got home (5 minute drive) engine bay was still very hot and smoke/steam was coming from somewhere. Still not sure where but it looked like it was coming from under the top rad hose inlet.

Looks like it might be head gasket after all if the car had a new rad and topped up with coolant.

Sounds like coolant on the belts causing slippage, and the steering will be sluggish, can you locate where the coolant is coming out from? from what is sounds like it is the head gasket, and it has leaked right there by the ps pump, can you post a better pic of the engine from the top side?

Bummer.. At least being a pushrod v8 theres no cam belt to worry about.
Car looks ace though! :thumbright:
How does it sound with the Flowmasters? Do they give a good roar to the 318?

Flowmasters do sound good with it. Its straight through pipes (not my choice, previous owner), but it doesnt sound too obnoxious.

Been doing a few tests these last couple weeks. Dont think it is head gasket in the end. Bought a head gasket test kit, it checks to see if there is exhaust and engine gas in the radiator chamber. The liquid is supposed to turn yellow if there is an issue. Tried it about 4 separate times and they all detected no gas in it.

Think it might be water pump. Have flushed it 3 times now and it keeps spewing out dark brown fluid (from water and blue coolant) and the water in the top of the cap doesnt really flow.

Is there a lot of pressure in the cooling system? I had a head gasket go on my old cavalier and it pressurised the system and just forced all the coolant out. I assume mine was a break in the gasket between cylinders and a water galley. Im assuming if yours has gone , its out of the side maybe??

Is it worth going through the torque sequence on the head bolts just to make sure all is tight enough?

I used a water system flush liquid on my Fury when I first had it. Pour it in, top up, run then drain it and flush through with clean water. Same again until its all clear then new antifreeze.

Any oily deposits in the water?? It sits on the top of the water so is easy to spot.

Just thinking aloud.... :read2:

Could just be a tired thermostat not opening fully,or the rad bunged up,worth taking that out and back flushing it.

I have broken down in it twice now, both times the rad has boiled over and water has come out of either the rad cap, or the pressure shot the overlfow hose off (nothing was keeping it on). I Have replaced both the radiator and the thermostat recently so those two are both crossed off the list.

Rad water isnt oily as far as i can tell. I Suspect its the pump/channels in the pump as i fill the rad up with clean water/coolant and it drains as a dark brown liquid.

If the water turns brown that quickly then there is a blockage/sediment somewhere which needs clearing. As latil says take the rad out, half fill it with water, plug all the outlets and turn it upside down and back again to see if the water comes out of the rad brown. Keep doing it until the water comes out clear. Then flush the rest of the system on the car until the water comes out clear, making sure the heater is on hot.

stick a hose in the water coolant engine inlet and check that water comes out the other end...
