Help with power steering

Post by charger01 »

Ok guys got a problem I cant get my head around. Power steering felt notchy , was fine a week ago no problems. Took it down the road and the steering was snatching to the right and physically felt notchy as you turned the wheel. Drove it back to the house and ordered a new power steering pump. Fitted it this morning and if anything its worse.Vented powersteering full lock both ways, now heres the problem.....when on full lock the power steering pulley.stops, belt carries on turning. Has anyone come across this before?

Seized bearing behind the pulley?
Some sort of blockage in the fluid system, preventing fluid being pumped correctly?

New pump Nige. Possibly blockage but system filled then when started took another fill of fluid which would suggest no blockages?

This is probably a stupid one but, is the power steering belt loose at all. I know you've probably checked it when changing the pump, can't think of anything else though.

did you fit a new pully and belt?

notchy sounds like its just the belt slipping and grabbing. seen this many times.

when the pullys wear the belt bottoms out rather than grabs the sides or the "V" part of the belt and doesn't get the correct amount of grip even when done up very tight.

I would suggest fitting all new pullys and belts as worn pullys will wear a belt out quicker.

Having said that, if they pump is new and the belt is ok, it would point to the steering box maybe being the problem
