ball joint splitter

Post by Coupe66 »

Hi all,

I'm looking to separate the steering ball joints on my 68 charger without damaging them or the rubber boots. I'm looking to get one of these from fleebay. Will this one fit my ball joints.

If you are referring to the Upper ball joints, you do not need a splitter.

Just jack the car up and secure it with the torsion bars still tensioned.

Loosen but do not remove the ball joint nut.

Get two ball pein hammers and whack the steering knuckle on both sides simultaneously and in due course the taper will release - hey presto!

Did it last week and it took about 10 minutes!

Cheers

You can try one of those.

I find it always ends in tears and I end up buying new boots (but not panties).

I've found that type of splitter a pain to use in the past. They seem to want to slip back out of position as they're tightened. The boots will most likely not survive either. I prefer the type in the link below but whatever you buy make sure the jaws are wide enough as not all splitters are large enough for our type of cars.

Thank's for the info I'll measure the joints to see if they will fit.
