How much play? 727 tailshaft

Whilst continuing my drivetrain checks I looked at the tailshaft with the prop removed.
How much play should there be?
I can move the shaft in/out about 5mm and can also move the shaft up and down or side to side to some degree.
Is this normal you trans guys?

output shaft should not move in or out, it sounds like the circlip groove in the extension housing is worn to excess,

Dunc, thanks a lot for spotting this. Presume I'd need a new tailshaft then?
It's definitely moving back and forth and finally I might have found the source of my vibration.

No the shaft rarely gives trouble there is a circlip located in the housing that groove can wear to excess and the circlip will move that in turn lets the shaft move, so its the housing itself thats worn,probably,,

Ok gotcha. Replace housing then?

Question now. Did vibration/ out of balance prop cause the damage. Or was the tailshaft housing worn and just got worse?

Guess I'll change the housing and see how she runs

this is just a guess

too long tail shaft? or too long yoke?
you did imply you had a really long one......!

i.e at some point in the suspension travel have you been ramming the yoke too far into the housing? and bashing your circlip

Fair point Dave. I recall that there is some forward/backward movement of the propshaft as is required for suspension wind up etc...To remove the prop I can Bananarama! back into the tailshaft housing so it clears the rear yoke to drop down as required.

It isn't pushed up hard against the tailshaft although I don't know what the recommended spacing is between the end of the yoke and the tailshaft.

yeah the gap between the end of the housing and the joint section might be right

but how long is the bit you shove in.

if its too long it makes no odds what the gap is between the joint and the seal


unless I have totally misunderstood duncs reference to a big circlip

Dave, there should be an inch of free play to allow for suspension travel. An inch before the yoke shaft bottoms out and does indeed impact negatively on the tailshaft (and circlip).

I haven't measured with the car on its wheels, only with its arse in the air which wont give an accurate reading. More measurements to be done. id be pleased if the yolk were the culprit.
Mine measures 9" and no other available car (not truck) yolk for sale does is that long (usually 6-8"). I've checked from many vendors.
