True Story here.
I saw Chuck at the old Rainbow back in the day.
He played a long Blues set (which I loved) but the old Teddy Boys were getting restless. Chuck did not care - he was already 1 hour late on stage anyway....off the street session band and all.
So, after about 45 mins he says "we're done with that, I'll play any requests now".
The audience start shouting out "Play Rollover Beethoven; play "Schooldays", do "You never can tell".
Someone shouts out "Do Sweet little sixteen!"
Some Cockney Geezer shouts out at the top of his voice "He did, and he got 5 years!!"
The crowd Bananarama! themselves laughing and Chuck almost storms off the stage.
He calmed down and played the rest of the night and then would not come off. Well past the noise curfew, he got the audience to get up on stage and dance so the stage crew could not get him off. He just stood at the back of the stage riffing and it turned into one big dance party.
The most bizarre gig I have ever been to.... and one of the most memorable.
RIP Chuck, thanks for the memories.

I saw him in September 1983 at the Wirrina in Peterborough, it's probably the smallest venue he's played, the gig was scheduled for a massive outdoor marquee but bad winds nearly destroyed it so it was first come & the rest got their money back, support was Screaming Lord Sutch & the Glitter Band (not together!) another legend gone.

...and pretty much invented that guitar chug-a-lug thang. A real innovator and I still enjoy listening to him down the years, just always sounds fresh.

I saw him a couple of times. The best was at the London Rock and Roll Show at Wembley Stadium in August 1972. This was a great show which included Bill Haley, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bo Diddely, and Chuck Berry. Chuck was on last and went over time, so some dickhead killed the power and stopped him dead. After a few minutes the power went back on and Chuck was told to finish.
