Phantom rubbing ?

Post by morgan »

Query 1 of 2 this morning following a 30 mile commute in the old gal.
Glorious as always among all the eurotrash, but a couple of funnies...

Funny # 1 - 'phantom' rubbing on steering. Only notice when actually steering (slow sharp corner, roundabout) but feels like a 'rub' through the steering wheel. Its been there a while but really noticed this morning. Nothing seems to be rubbing - but the sensation is very much like when I had the passenger-pitman-arm-thing rubbing the headers (it isnt, I checked it).

So nothing obviously amiss. But a 'rubbing' sensation all the same.
Any ideas ? Steering pump on the way out ? Dry bushing (although they are all new a couple of years ago and pumped full of grease/goo) ?

Sounds like noisy pump, my Voyager does it and you can occasionally feel the pump pulsing if you hold the wheel still other that at dead centre.

I had a case of disk rotor rubbing on caliper bracket once

judicious use of belt sander on bracket and some attention to wheel bearing sorted that.

that felt like rubbing. just perceptible on cornering

but only when turning left
and I could hear it if I switched off the engine while moving

these were floating head sliders rather than PIN slider callipers

like 1973 - 1995 single piston jobbies

No - its more of a resitance thing - you can feel 'resistance' in the wheel - imagine that the whole steering assembly had been overtightened or a bush was ungreased - that sort of 'rubbing on something' feel.

Brake pipes for rear mounted calipers stretching to front mount aftermarket calipers?

bent idler mount?

lower shock bolts in backwards
should have a pyramid lock nut thingo facing forward not the hex head of the bolt

track rod ends tightend with pin at extreme of travel and cocked round in opposite directions?

probably all things you would have noticed before now....:)

alternatives but Matt probably has it sussed

if you drive it to the NATS I bet its gone before you get there :)

just needs a bit of exercise

Mine does some stuff in slow corners, the Cuda did it too but I rebuilt the column and fixed it,the shaft gets worn and will slop a bit in side the column under cornering,in the chally I deal with it as the engine torques up the the header Bananarama! the column, the motor mounts have gotten sloppy over the years ,do a test open the hood, start the car, have someone watch to see if the engine moves and how far under a power brake see if you are hitting on something

Possible breakdown of steering column bearing? The one you can see from under the bonnet, usually a fibre type thing, either yellowish or golden brown depending on condition and held in place by two bolts.
The drivers side front tyre on mine rubs the chassis on full lock when reversing out my drive, but this is the only time it rubs. Regardless of how tight or slow a corner I take, go figure!

 So yesterday I topped up the fluid. Smooth as you like. DOH !!! (it must have just dropped below the critical level.) I naturally assumed it was something more worrying. haha. (at least I 'fessed up and braved the ribbing. The moral is 'Dont dismiss the obvious' ) :clown:
