Advice on torque converter/stall

I need some advice on a torque/stall converter. My car is a dog off the line, great when its up in the revs.Wont even do a burnout,i think the converters too tight?Thumps into gear from neutral or park and the idle drops from 950 ish to 600 ish when put in gear.
Its a 318 that someone has put the heads and intake from a 360 engine on,a purple cam which i dont know the specs for but its lumpy,600cfm holley and headers.
Gearbox is a 727 and it has 3.23 gears .
Should i get it rolling road tested so i can see the power curve and match a stall converter to that or shall i just stick a 2500 or higher stall in it?
i was also going to put a shift kit in it too, just to hold the gears longer in drive.

Quoted convertor stall speeds are arbitrary at best and usually based on big block applications. By your description, my gut feeling is something rated around 3000 will be needed. Without cam specs its a guess but with a relatively tall rear gear I'd be erring on the loose side. Having owned a similarly equipped 318 I know there isn't much low end torque at all and a rolling road would give you an idea of where the torque peak is.

Thanks for that,my other car is a big block and has a 3000 stall in it and that feels fine on the street.
So i need a 3k stall converter for a small block, any recommendations where to get one in the uk? I'm going to stick an ad in the wanted section too.

I doubt you will find anyone stocking High stall 727 convertors in the UK. I bought the Hughes 2500 I have in the Barracuda direct from Summit, shipping was quite reasonable as I recall. Will be ordering a looser one at some point as it's too tight so I will probably go to Summit again.
