So, Ive just bought a '76 D300 with a 400ci and 727. I drove it home over 500 miles yesterday and it seems like the shifting was getting slightly and progressively worse. It felt like the shifting was getting harder the closer to home I got and within a couple of miles of home it never shifted from 2-3 until I came to a junction, popped it into neutral and then back to drive and took off again.

I checked the oil this morning after I warmed it up. With the engine running I selected every gear then back to neutral and checked the dipstick. The oil looked fresh and was at max. Ive not been out in it again today, my ears have not recovered from yesterday yet.

Check the adjustment of the kick down linkage, that’s the usual cause of late and hard shifting.

Loads of info on the American forums. Basically the arm on the box needs to be fully rearward at full throttle for a start.

So I managed to find the time to have a quick look at why the Trucks not shifting into 3rd. Its an intermittent issue. Last night I drove into town and although it shifted into 3rd it was a little hard. On the way home it would not shift into 3rd, which was very frustrating, I gave the column shift a wee wiggle and it popped right into 3rd (I was going about 35-40mph) and it continued to drop into 3rd.

This morning I had a look under the Truck and right away noticed what looked like a bolt missing in the linkage. There's clearly a threaded hole in the mounting boss but feeling round to the end of the linkage rod and without seeing it it felt smooth, like there was noting meant to attach to it. I also noticed that the rods supporting grommet was out of position and some kind of retaining clip is missing. Anyone have one or know where I could get one?

Hi Andy is that shaft the horizontal pivot shaft for the kickdown?
On my B body there is a stub shaft and pivoting bracket that screws into the trans casing.
Either way that plastic bush needs to be in the hole in the bracket to centralise the shaft.
Otherwise it's all a bit vague.

Edit - the last photo shows the bush in the bracket, whereas the 2nd pic it looks like it's come out?

Doesn't look like its sitting in there to me.

Yes, the bush was in the bracket and it was out. I understand the bush needs to be in the bracket and secured with a clip of some kind. Im trying to find out what clip I need. Ive currently secured the Bush in location with a suggestion I found on FB. Ive now smooth shifting. But I cant rely on a garden hose and Jubilee Clips for ever.

Jubilee clip sounds good to me. I'd have used a cable tie.

When we retrofitted our original style shifter & console etc we had to replicate the bracket & bush that mounts to the trans for the vertical rod down from the shifter. Got a bracket made and used a bronze 'oilite' bush that works great. Press fit into bracket and will outlast plastic.

Not sure what size exactly. Bracket would need to be drilled out for a press fit.
