Best replace the stock Voltage reg with a modern semiconductor device. I did this a few months ago using a 3 amp reg LM78T05. I uses a small heatsink and bolted it to the back of the gauges but for some reason it only lasted a few days. These things can get very hot so I replaced it using a larger heat sink and so far so good. Was quiet at work today so just incase it blows again I made this switch mode supply. These run cold so no need for a heatsink.
