Simon, I have been thinking about this comment all night and the more I think about it the more infuriating it sounds.

Have a look at the lives of horses on their way from Poland to Italy to be killed for meat and tell me that that is a fair way to treat a horse? As for a quick death...well if the horse is still alive by the time it gets there. One horse spent 5 days hanging upside down by a hoof trapped in the bars of the trailer. Live export is THE cruelest form of animal treatment.

Anyway, this may not be the best place to discuss this and I am sorry for offending any meateaters, but meat industry is certainly pulling the wool over a lot of peoples eyes. I am not asking anyone to give up meat, just cut down a little...it will make a difference to you AND the environment.
And before you all go PMing the Mods saying some bloke is attacking your right to eat what you like, just re-read what I have written...eat LESS meat, I am not asking you to give it up completely. Listen to the message in the Mark Bittman video, he is NOT a veggie.

Well I'm off for a Burgerking for my lunch, then I'm having a T bone for my Dinner, I might even be able to squeeze in a tattie! If I can find some Horse meat I'll have that instead.

Good discussion and some interesting opinions.
I do take your point Dave. My missues been a veggie for probably 30 years, for her own reasons. I am not, but understand that we have to look after our food supplies (it doesnt always grow on trees -or does it?). Without healthy food we die within a cupla weeks. 'Healthy' food is a contentious term, and I am no specialist. If anyone is interested in my opinion, I prefer meat that has had a reasonable life before it was topped - it tastes better. Difficult to prove and indeed more difficult to understand what a 'good life' is to an animal destined for meat. The examples given of animal treatment are difficult to take in. There is no excuse for cruelty. Does increased demand = increased cruelty? Probably.
In an ideal world, all meat should be consumed within its locality, treated well, fed well and killed efficiently. This is not an ideal world, and cost is certainly an issue as is variety.
Also, the less cattle, pigs etc. in the world, the less greenhouse gases produced. If what they say about global warming/end of the world is true. Thing on the news now about green-taxing cattle to offset emissions! Perhaps they might lay off the car owner now?
PS why is a lot of veggie food 'meat' shaped'? Veggie cutlets, sausages etc. I hate that stuff, give me vegetable-looking vegetables everytime. Break the link veggies!

I didn't eat meat for years, plainly because I didn't like it and no other reason must have been 20 years or so.
Never did me any harm not eating meat.
Now I do eat some meat and it's not doing me any harm either
Fact... we as a species only developed big brains ( in relation to everything else on the planet) by eating meat, something to do with fat and brain cells, then again living on it now won't make you Stephen Hawkins, probably just make you dead or at least on the Cardio ward at the hospital
Fact.... meat production is one of the biggest producers of global warming gasses as in methane... yeah cows fart and a lot.
Fact.... the human race are omnivores so we need some of everything, guess it comes down to the greedy money grabbing Bananarama! side of the human race to ensure that any meat produced is done properly, then again 10,000 years ago I would have thought Mr Caveman wouldn't have cared either
Just a minefield really and I guess everyone needs to be comfortable with how the meat they eat is raised

Thanks for some positive response Ian, and or taking this seriously. A good life for a food animal I suppose is one where it does not suffer unecessary cruelty, has proper veterinary care or is at least euthanised rather than left to suffer if it becomes ill or is injured to the point that it will starve to death or is living in agony. But we all know the industry puts profit way before animal welfare and that is the main reason I gave up meat. I don't agree with the farming methods. I love the taste of it but I don't want to be responsible for the uneccessary suffering of any animal. A lot of people think all veggies are tree huggers and cry at the thought of carving up something as cute as a little lamb - not true. Many gave up meat for many different reasons, health and impact on the environment being a couple of good ones. The sea is fished to death too. One day there will be little to catch or other species will become food, maybe jellyfish and chips? One day cod and chips will be a rarity. Its not just the catching and removal of fish, it is the damage to sea beds and whole eco systems that support fish life by dragging nets along the sea floor. The oceans can not sustain this onslaught. If small furry animals were caught on land on the scale that fish are caught, and in the same manner, there would be a world wide outcry. Because we can't see under the water we just imagine everything is fine down there. Seals are killed by the thousand to protect fish reserves. The cod fishery off Newfoundland, Canada collapsed in 1992, leading to the loss of some 40,000 jobs in the industry. The cod stocks in the North Sea and Baltic Sea are now heading the same way and are close to complete collapse. Something needs to change.
