Ah. I didn't realise the transistor couldn't handle full battery voltage and coil current. I thought as long as it has a heat sink and kept away from external heat sources it would manage the slightly higher current with no problems. We live and learn.

cheers Ade, I’m ok with it getting hot, I mentioned it so we understand that is it working and not just there for show :thumbright:

cheers Rob, I have a PN8202 already relocated vertical to the inner fender below the washer bottle :thumbright:

no probs fellas

its just the usual brain dump :)

dave yes todays transistors can probably handle those currents no problem

ceramic and semiconductor tech has come a long way...

FBOs igntion is supposed to work well at 12-15 volts no balast and their own coil so they obviouly put some time in there.

steve a magneto would be fun but much better when crank driven...
the weight of the internals and the fact they are hard to turn kinda dictates not using them on a standard cam driven screw gear and in some cases plastic drive gear for street kinda stuff

they worked quite well on VW aircooled Drag race engines cos you could do away with the alternator and fan and cliam back something daft like 33% of your power that the fan was eating up. no good for the street mind run it longer than a few minutes and it would overheat the oil

Bananarama! I missed that. $190 ?!?! errr - dont worry about it Ade, as they say on Dragons Den "I'm out". Sorry about that.

Will wait and see if price comes down (like half!) but otherwise its spare orangebox in the boot I think !! :)
