Mikes 64 Fury

Post by mike jones »

With my sons Cal Look Beetle finally finished I’ve started the new Engine for the Fury.
I ran the car a couple of times in 2012 before discovering a badly epoxy patched crack in the block found a new block through the club and ordered a stroker kit from 440 Source. The block is with a local machine shop and should be back in 2-4 weeks (a bit tight for Gary’s Picnic) other work on the job list is
Tidy Engine Bay wiring
Fit MSD and Start /Retard box with a better fix than 2 self-tappers!
Fit grp hood
New torque convertor
Refresh Gearbox
The half shafts were fitted with the adjuster on the wrong side and not knowing if they have been swapped or been wrong since they were fitted I’ll replace them as well,
This is only a start, floor needs patching and I can see daylight between the wheel tubs and the body side but they can wait.

Thanks for the loan of the Torque plates Jim, I enjoyed the chat.
Bit disappointed, unpacked my pistons at the machine shop, no sign of any work to balance them, and a discrepancy of 1.7g over the ones tested, the rods show no signs of any rework either, so I will be paying to have it all done again  .Shame realy I've got a lovely piece of paper showing how the calculate the bobweight including a weight for oil

Will, the parts and the rest of the service was great I just wouldn't bother getting them to balance a race motor

Mike, the Pistons should come as a weight matched set, likewise the Rods, the only part to be altered, should be the crank,Sounds a little more like a factory balance(itll do).
I never buy balanced rotating assemblies, because of this :( I get it done over here.

The block is now back from the machine shop, http://www.rolandalsop.com/
along with a balanced rotating assy. I emailed 440 Source about the balance I paid for before shipping, their tolerance is 2.5g, mine is now 0.2g ! I can't recommend Alsops enough and agree with Dave, balance over here, at least you can moan face to face :-) Also uncovered some less then accurate centring on the crank balance, at least no weight was added, to fall out later
