Cheers Will.......
Is it possible that they sent you the wrong gasket set.....

Other than that I know W heads had D/square shaped ports, but I thing the bolting config is different compared to 318-360 stock heads, so it no way it would fit!

I got the correct smaller gaskets after a bit of bother, fitted the headers with new 3 bolt flanges and made up a new complete system with T/A boxes, side exit stainless tips.
Finally got it all fitted tonight, so I could drive it tomorrow for Drive It Day.
Well no!
The metallic noise is back worse than before, and I cant feel any obvious leaks. Noise was there as soon as it fired up.
I have given up for today, compression test tomorrow I think, then see what I need to strip down
Gut feeling is a broken valve rattling round in the top of a piston. Not happy.

I took them off before the manifolds and all looked OK. Will a collapsed lifter have a loose pushrod?
Is there any way of telling if they are collapsed without removing each one in turn?

Right, so compression good on all 8. All above 135PSI.
pain to have to remove the header to get the back two plugs out but hey.
Ran it with covers off, nothing obvious rattle wise. All seem to be tight when pushing down on the rockers against the pushrod, no slack felt.
Inlet off, still cant see anything broken.
All pushrods out in order, then lifters. All are free in their bores, and are rotating, no stuck lifters.
I have now tested all lifters by putting them in a pillar drill stand and applying pressure to the top with a pushrod sized plunger, and counted the time to oil oozing out the side. Most are 15 + seconds about 3 were much less.
Are these the knackered ones? I couldn't feel any slack in them.
This engine has only done 2000 miles since all new internal, including lifters.

Miles, could you see the failed lifter? Was it obvious there was lots of play?MilesnMiles wrote:Mmmm, depends on what makes your arse twist Matt![]()
There was no grouanching sound, just a mettallic knocking sound. It was pretty obvious. Didn't think it would break and it didn't.
Take the inlet off and have a look. Has to be done. Hope it's not a valve.
