Update time!
Earlier I mentioned an oil leak which I ignored as the tapping noise was the concern.
With the noise sorted and just a mild header gasket blow, I noticed the oil leak was horrendous, 1 litre per 50 miles !
Finally plucked up the courage and a couple of days off to get it all apart again, headers off, coolant drained, drag link disconnected, engine mount off, sump off and found this.
Front rubber seal slipped backwards as the little rubber peg had pulled off, so the gasket had gone in far enough to become an oil way for any oil to run straight out the front end of the seal and onto the K frame.
This rust prevention exercise has spread oil as far as the back of the gearbox.
I have now got it all back together with new seals, I used the later type with the 2 pegs and the large lip which hooks over the sump. the book says use the 6 peg one if you have the holes in the sump, but this gasket looks a better design as I can see if it is still in place before tighetning everything up.
Got it running, headers quieter (at the moment) , will give it a gentle run tomorrow and see if it still leaks.
New Noise - Part 2 another new noise

Ah ! That solved that one. I have leaks from engine (damned if I can see where though, other than the floor :-) ), gearbox and power steering.
Not enough to ever show on the dipstick but enough to need plastic sheeting on the garage floor. I have come to the conclusion its normal.
Steering is the worst one - and I'll have to box out and get it Anton'd next time I get the access (i.e. when the headers are off again etc).
On the upside, I am convinced the underside is only as good as it is because of the 40-year-thick layer of oil-sludge I had to scrape off it when I did the underside.
As Pete says - Onwards and upwards. Gotta love these old cars eh ?
