James Mays Cars of the People
By accident stumbled across series 2 episode 3 last night...hadn't seen the others, didn't mean to watch this. Oh dear
after 15 minutes of driving an amphibious car down Birmingham canals he is whisked off to a US desert so he can yabber about muscle cars being the American car of the people in the late 60s. Ok so far so good. The car he chooses to demonstrate this is a '69 Charger R/T which is where his researchers or his own knowledge evaporates. The R/T "has a 7.2 engine with 440 horsepower" we are told - no mention of cubic inches or different engine sizes or accurate hp figures, just that an R/T has 440hp and does 10mpg.
Do some more research or dont waste money getting flown to the US for a jolly just to get 5 mins of footage with nodding donkey oil wells to make a point about fuel consumption ..........anyone on here with a Charger R/T cold have let him have 5 mins of footage and told him a darn sight more accurate info. Disappointing....

I caught this by accident and thought it was alright. Yes the Charger specs were off, but at least they picked Mopar as the epitome of the muscle car era and not a Mustang.
Bear in mind the bulk of the audience won't pick up on the detail, its evening entertainment.
A proper anorak would realise that the Triumph Herald that raced the Amphicar across Birmingham was the wrong pairing of engine type as the Amphicar is 1147cc Herald engine but they used a later Herald for the road car with 1296cc.
I'll get my coat.

Really?? Just a slip of the tongue is all it takes to get you ‘disappointed’??Gas for GOSH wrote:The R/T "has a 7.2 engine with 440 horsepower" we are told - no mention of cubic inches or different engine sizes or accurate hp figures, just that an R/T has 440hp and does 10mpg.Do some more research or dont waste money getting flown to the US for a jolly just to get 5 mins of footage with nodding donkey oil wells to make a point about fuel consumption ..........anyone on here with a Charger R/T cold have let him have 5 mins of footage and told him a darn sight more accurate info. FFS, it’s an entertainment program, end of
A lot of the other 2 episodes were in the US as well, they’ll have done all the US filming in 1 go
Come on guys, get a grip, maybe you’d be happier if there were no car related programs on tv
Exactly!! and a stunning Charger it was as wellMattH wrote:Yes the Charger specs were off, but at least they picked Mopar as the epitome of the muscle car era and not a Mustang.![]()

An excellent series
Well worth a watch
All still on iPlayer
Ep1 was about the war, the one we won … or did we?? Ep2 about 4x4’s, Ep3 as Ali said about cars of the future from the past
Great to see another Chrysler representation in Leno’s Turbine (pronounced turban apparently??) Car

Watched it on iplayer. I both love James May and the Charger section.
MattH is right as ever - at least they chose a Charger not a Mustang. The detail is not important - the iconic image of a true muscle car in its native habitat was what it was about. Besides which, any media depiction of a Charger and the romance that comes with it will protect any precious market values... So look on the bright side.
He answered both the most common questions I get asked "Wow ! How big is the engine ? WOW ! How many miles to the gallon ? WWWWOOOWWWW!!!"

Im enjoying the series too. I especially liked the one about 4 x 4s. I could get all sweaty over those very early landcruisers etc....not cheap anymore!
Was interested to hear that Chrysler loaned out some turbine cars for 3 months to customers for test purposes!
I would much rather watch anything car, bike, train, space, plane etc etc related than any of the 'Im a celebrity' type junk that's always on telly these days, minor errors and all if Im honest.
I used to enjoy Top Gear until they started doing stupid stuff like hand painting their cars to wind people up etc.
The last series of this prog had a good episode on the Eastern block cars....very interesting!
Cheers Steve
