POWER BIG MEET 2016 VASTERAS SWEDEN (photos)
Moderator: Moderators
We’re not done yet, that was just Thursday, I’ll try to get the rest sorted today
Friday; A Mission
Went down to breakfast and this Charger had just pulled up outside the hotel, chatted to the owner, it’s an original 4spd, a/c car, he’s had it for 18 months, everything works, 1 previous owner, the old boy that bought it in ’68 passed away in 1983, his widow kept the car in the garage until 2014 and it never turned a wheel during that time

Decided to take a cab to the airfield, save some legs for later, this is officially included in the Mission as we had already walked to the Coop to get some bottled water

we asked cabby to take us as far as he could before getting stuck in traffic, we got as far as the Power Station then bailed and walked the remaining distance to the airfield, we stood by the entrance for a while and watched the cars role in

The 'Power' bit of Power Big Meet comes from Power magazine, Swedens biggest American car publication, even if you can't read Bananarama!'s a great bi monthly mag. They put on 4/5 big shows each year across the country with Vasteras being the largest, allegedly anywhere, the only one possibly bigger is the Woodward dream cruise.
If Kjell Gustavson, the main man at Power pulls the plug i expect someone else will have a go with a different name, I'd also be surprised if thousands didn't still turn up and cruise as that side is as big if not bigger than the show

The bulk of the day was then spent traversing the main field, with breaks for water and hotdogs, I would be surprised if we saw half the cars there, there’s another field on the other side of the markets that we never got to at all, impossible to do it all in one sitting

It appears it’s never truly a ‘static’ show, there were cars rolling in on one side until late morning, and then early afternoon some start queuing up to exit, we spent a good half hour sitting watching the sights as the cars rolled (slowly) out, why go to the car show when the car show can go to you

About 5’ish we set off back toward the city for the start of the ‘official’ cruise, thousands of people had turned out to watch and there was a carnival atmosphere

Next headed for the marina again for evening dinner, out of luck finding a restaurant with availability this time, it was heaving!! So we went into the centre and got a table in a bar by the river, we had Reindeer, tasty
the Friday night cruise was something else, there's a one way route from the city a few miles out to a gas station, down to the show field then a few miles back to the city, strict one way and the cops have the opposite side closed, it's just like a massive carnival / party, bands on at bars at various points along the route, we set off along the cruise route and called in a couple of bars along the way, participants range from high dollar concourse cars to raggares with people sat all over them as they scrape along the ground, very hard to describe the atmosphere, it was just complete grid locked chaos, the gas station was open selling gas, cars parked all over the place, some stalls selling god knows what, just complete madness, there was a bar and a band on, all in a gas station, unbelievable, we stayed for a couple of hours then walked back passing the same cars we had passed the other way several hours before, there was a great atmosphere and no agro that we saw, photos no way convey the atmosphere unfortunately, definitely an experience not to be missed

this was the first year since I've been going, which is every year since 99, that they closed off the cruise route going the other way around, you always used to be able to go the other way as well which flowed better and you could get a good look at the cars which were queued the other way rather than just sitting in the line

righto, seems weird, in doing that they've reduced the road capacity by halfMotorama wrote:this was the first year since I've been going, which is every year since 99, that they closed off the cruise route going the other around, you always used to be able to go the other way as well which flowed better and you could get a good look at the cars which were queued the other way rather than just sitting in the line

Saturday; A Mooch
A more leisurely day, mooched around the hotel until midday, then strolled down to the marina for a brew and just watched some cars cruise by, wandered over to the bus station about 2’ish for transfer to Stockholm, no direct flights to Manchester at the weekend unfortunately so we were on a route via Frankfurt, home about midnight

Reflecting on a fantastic 3 days, an event I’ve wanted to do for a few years now, I’m still taking it all in, what a blast
So that’s that, seriously hope this event doesn’t fold
