Fitted the Mancini rear crank oil seal on my 440 with motor still in the car. Crank seal bean leaking since I bought the car. The seal had been replaced in the last few years so the rope seal had long gone.
The seal was good with no visible wear,but no side seals ! side seal grooves had been gummed up with silicone only and that was the issue. Some people !!!
So far so good lets hope it stays that way.
I have to say not as difficult has you read on the internet.

Big block rear seals of any style are a pain for leaking. The generally accepted best method of getting a leak free seal is to do away with the side seals and fill the space with silicone. The seal is fitted not level with the block surface but sitting out a little on one side, same on the retainer, blob of silicone on the ends and bolt it up.

I hear what you say, done correctly maybe, but not like this.Final picture looks better. Seems a very poor original design,no way to seal the retainer cap bottom surface to the block other than with RTV. I wonder how they did it in 68 ?

I think before silicone sealers came along these old cars just leaked oil after a few years. I certainly don't recall anything being particularly oil tight back in the day.

You know how you start the day with a car that works perfectly well but you have a couple of very basic “improvements” to fit and then you end up with a car that not only doesn’t work it now has a multitude of issues?

Smartened up the top of the radiator. Took a while, used a scalloped knife and wet and dry. Then Frosts radiator paint.

Got an update yesterday on the car.

4 Barrel conversion is almost complete. Just a bit more wiring and some tweaks.
Been away for nearly 2 months now getting a whole load of upgrades:
340 HIPO manifolds, full custom dual exhaust including cutouts, H pipe, over axle pipes and new stainless tips.
Weight reduction (aprox 100lbs) in the form of mini starter, PAS to new 20:1 manual steering box conversion & (temporary) a/c delete. Distributor mods and service, Upgraded charging system wiring, new 130amp alternator and regulator to replace the original that the AA destroyed. (Don't ask).
New radiator x4 (Again, Don't ask)
Electric fan conversion with stand alone revotec fan controller.
Holley 4bbl 4160 aluminium body carb on Edelbrock 2176 inlet.
