Re: '58 (nash) rambler american family project
i needed carbs for the tunnel ram and as it'll be almost exclusively a street car they needed to be a) smallish and b) holley's as i prefer/understand them. so when a small block ford polished tunnel ram came up with a pair of 390's on i did the obvious thing and tried to buy just the carbs. no dice there so i bought the lot and have advertised the manifold and filters for sale.
neil.
forgot to say they came with 2 boxes of holley jets too so that'll help with setting them up for my fe engine.

i'm looking into the fi-tech 2x4 efi to go on my tunnel ram in the future. i'll initially go with the pair of 390 holley's i've just bought but as (dare i say it) i want the nash to be a keeper i will swap to efi at some point over a winter. at least the holley's will sell easily as they're always in demand for rover v8's

Fi tech has a terrible reputation, I’d steer well clear of it if I were you because you’ll be on your own then it come’s to sorting it out. Rule of thumb with tunnel rams is you double the single carb CFM not halve it, the man in the pub will tell you different though!

Re: '58 (nash) rambler american family project
i read that myself in the early days, however i've 'spoken' to people in the states who have it now (including the 4x2 setup) and it seems those early issues are sorted. that along with decent backup from fi tech now made me take a second look. the way i see it is if they hadn't sorted those early issues they wouldn't be still available, no customers... no sales... no company.Blue wrote: Tue May 26, 26 7:30 pm Fi tech has a terrible reputation, I’d steer well clear of it if I were you because you’ll be on your own then it come’s to sorting it out. re the tunnel ram cfm requirements, the 318 setup i bought from you was (of course) primarily set up for drag racing. in 'daily driving' use it would richen up and foul plugs unless you cleared it's throat as it were. mark bull who had my valiant swapped the 600 holley's for 390's he had and said it sorted that issue and it was more driveable. hence the pair of 390's i've bought now for my 390ci fe. so the next logical step in terms of driveability to me at least is efi. i'll do a lot more research as always before committing to the change as it's not a cheap conversion.

Well the likes of John Sleath still won’t touch fi tech but if you are satisfied its now better than it was, go for it. Theres always been this thing in car world about big carbs automatically mean rich running, it’s nonsense. Everything is a combination of parts and if it’s off a smaller carb is the usual sticking plaster which will sometimes mask the real issue.

Re: '58 (nash) rambler american family project
i've done more digging and i won't be going with a fitech efi setup. you can say 'i told you so' lol. the holley systems seem to have much better reviews and for the little extra it costs i'm favouring the terminator x version. any thoughts on those mate?

Re: '58 (nash) rambler american family project
in the mean while i've ordered a 110gph, 7psi electric pump to feed the two 390 holleys i'll be using for a start.

Re: '58 (nash) rambler american family project
Holley EFI stuff seems to have a good reputation. I must admit I don’t really see what you are gaining for all the extra expense and electronics that could play up over a well sorted carb. I’m not trying to be negative its just my way not to add complication unless there’s a real need to do so.

Re: '58 (nash) rambler american family project
oh i'm not looking to change straight away, it's a big chunk of cash to lay out. i'll get the holley's set up on a rolling road once the cars on the road and if it behaves itself they'll stay. the money will then go on a pair of ally heads instead, lol.

Re: '58 (nash) rambler american family project
i've sold the small block tunnel ram today. so the pair of 390 holley's and the finned filters now owe me a little less than one 390 which is great.
