Dammit, just found the timing chain has a bit over ½" of play. I'm pretty sure 1/4" is pretty much the limit?

Sorry it's been a while!
We'll I got a new timing set and it was running better than ever!
Yep, just before it broke again

Got to the Pod for the Nats, reversed off the trailer, hit the Linelok, booted it and dumped the clutch expecting a nice wheelspin to impress the boy. Instead of which reverse stayed engaged, the was a loud crunch and the gearbox ate itself!

Pics won't load from my phone...
So it took a while to figure the best route to take. I toyed with a 5-speed but they're no tougher than my 18-spline. Parts are getting hard to find and EXPENSIVE now. As I needed the cluster gear, reverse idle, first-second clutch gear and second gear, i was looking at a big bill anyway so I've opted for the Passon slickshift kit for a couple of hundred extra $$$.
I also scored a used scattershield- also rare for smallblocks, with a Ramrod shifter, a bloody bargain that lot was! I'd have to cut the floor and fit a console so I'm not sure whether to use that yet.

Ramrod should fit without cutting the floor, it's more compact than my Mr Gasket and that fitted without surgery.

Here we go- got the pics to my laptop...
Firstly the trashed cluster and reverse.
Next the first- second slider with a tooth knocked out.
All the undamaged bits ready to clean.
The casings already washed.

Sorry, still can't fix the sideways photos!
My Lakewood scattershield. The backplate is a bit rusty so that's gone for blasting and powdercoating, the main case just needs a bit of sanding and I'll throw a can of Mopar orange at it.
The Ramrod shifter next to my existing shifter.
Blue- it looks to like the bracket will lift the shifter up through my shifter hole to above the floor so I'll have to cut a hole for the rods? Or am I being dim?
And my clutch which is a little worn on the organic side but undamaged from all the abuse I give it

That's not a Ramrod shifter, it's a super shifter with the conventional H pattern (Ramrod is inline). The bracket moves the shifter rearward and higher to get rid of the long lever B body transmissions usually have. It's a straight bolt in on an A body but the hole in the tunnel hump might be too far forward on a B body, simple cut and shut job if it is.

Stop that Wil!
Ah bugger I've been had! It's not going make much difference to mine for the work involved then Blue?
Is it still worth a few bucks?

They are good shifters, short throw and straight braced rods that won't deflect, I'd use it.

Another tiny bit of progress...
I got the scattershield blasted and powdercoated. I bunged in a new pinion bearing, Cleaned up an refitted the clutch and installed my new big heavy lump of orange steel plate

Have you checked the bearing pilot diameter against the scattershield? Lakewoods normally have a pilot size to suit the large diameter of the overdrive trans and come with a reducing ring for the rest, that is always missing on a used item. Also, if the starter nose doesn't reach the hole in the scattershield the extension adaptor is missing.

You MUST DTI the bellhousing to the block to ensure the clutch and input shaft is concentric with the Crankshaft.

So, this happened a couple of days ago...

I'd been working on an oil leak at the back of the inlet manifold and disconnected a fuel pipe for access. A couple of days went by and I forgot I hadn't reconnected it. I also failed my usual checks of all connections after any job. A simple mistake with effing dire consequences!
